Key checks the horses one last time before she settles on for the evening. She spends a bit of extra time with her new horse getting to know him. When she’s finished she turns to face the fire and scans the area checking on her companions the way she did with the horses. She finds a spot a little ways away from the group where she won’t be over heard but where they can see her and she them, and still be able to watch the grasslands around them as well. She sits down and pulls out a stone to call Anglerond.
It takes a bit of time but eventually Anglerond can be heard faintly, “Hello, is this you Key?”
Key sighs gratefully when she finally hears Anglerond’s voice. For a few moments she wasn’t sure if the stone was going to work.
“It’s me. I hope you’re not busy. Do you have a few moments to talk?”
Anglerond’s voice softens when he hears Key, “I always have time for you. I take it that you are ok if you are calling me. How are things on the steppes?”
Key smiles at the sound of his voice. She chuckles softly at his question.
“Which version of the story would you like? The version that will make you feel better, or the one that might keep you from a peaceful trance? They both end happily, lucky for you.”
Anglerond sighs lightly on the other side, dreading his next words, “Please tell me the full uncensored version. I want to be there with you, this is as close as I can get.”
Key laughs again and settles in to tell the story.
“They we’re knights of Nural. They were guarding a man who had stolen an artifact from the orc band here. Jade was in the process of copying the sword shard the knights attacked Sargon and we ended up killing all the knights. We were covered in gore, they bad some weird self destruct. We were all in the clear except for Sargon who caught a divine disease that we will have to free his goddess for him to be cured. We got the artifact back to the orcs and they gave us the shards of the blade, there was a celestial feather inside that they wanted. The shards will kill a god. We put a piece of the shard into my blade now it can kill a god.” She stops for breath and to wait to hear Anglerond’s reaction.
Anglerond’s is quiet for a moment as he composes himself and puts away his concern, “It sounds like this trip has already been worth the time. I assume you are continuing onto the mountain. It will be starting winter there within a month. Do you think you will start your long journey home within a month?”
Key scans her surroundings while she talks, letting her eyes land on each of her companions then sweeping the distance around camp.
“We should. We’re another five days from the mountain, then there is a dwarven hold to search. Im hoping we’re on our way home in the next two weeks.” She pauses trying to keep her emotions from running over.
“I miss you and our children. I want nothing more than to curl up in bed with you and watch the rain hit the windows while our babies play at our feet.”
Anglerond chuckles, “I very much would love that, and it will be soon I promise. The kids are doing very well and I am getting used to Skriv now checking on them. Is that something you approved? Do you know your next target after this yet?”
“I don’t think Skriv and I have actually talked about it but I think its fine. Ive seen him with Luke’s son and if he decides to care for our children half as much as he cares for that boy he’ll die to protect them. I also want them to feel comfortable around people of all nationalities. But if you aren’t okay with it then we’ll nix it.” She pauses to make herself a bit more comfortable, resting her back against a large rock.
“The next thing we have to do is free Sovanar. Sargon’s life now depends on it. That will hopefully be a shorter trip.”
Anglerond replies, “I have watched him now for several months and he dotes over Izzy and Luke’s son. He started doing it with ours after Luke married Nestrim. He probably considers them part of the family and I am comfortable with him… Tsovinar huh? You know Sargon really hasn’t been trying to get a hold of her. Every time I hear it, it is sort of a ‘ok maybe someday’ thing. If I was a cleric I would be burning my effort on that.”
There is silence for a few moments, “You know, no one is in the room with me…”
Key chuckles low in her throat, a broad smile spreading across her lips. Her mouth suddenly gone dry she licks her lips before continuing.
“That tracks with Skriv. Sid has become rather… fatherly with me of late. Im serious, if your not comfortable with Skriv just let Nestrim know. I’ll back you up whatever you decide.” She stops talking for a moment letting the tension build. When she speaks her voice has dropped an octave and is rough with emotion.
“Where are you?”
Anglerond’s tone changes pitch slightly,, “I am now in the bedroom, just got back from feeding the twins… I know that isn’t something sexy to say, sorry about that..”
It is evident with his breathing and word pitch that Key has his full attention.
Key throws her head back and belly laughs.
“Im sorry to ruin the mood but I just had the funniest picture pop into my head of you breast feeding.” It takes a few moments for her to contain her laughter. Once she does she clears her throat and attempts to recapture the previous atmosphere.
“Where were we?” She says in a husky voice with just the slightest undertones of mirth.
Anglerond can’t stop laughing for a few moments, his voice is tinged with humor and something huskier, “I think we were talking and you were starting to maybe slip off your clothes, at least verbally?” the humor is still in his voice.
Te’teh appears a few feet away from Key out of thin air, she gives the monk a big smile and walks over, leaning down. “You ok Key? You disappeared and I was told to go check on you.” Te’teh’s red eyes that have no pupil visible watch the monk curiously. She cocks her head and her small horns almost quiver in curiosity.
Key starts, Te’Teh’s abrupt arrival scaring an expletive out of her. She groans in frustration letting her head relax back onto the rock behind her. All trace of humor gone, she lifts her head making eye contact with the younger tiefling as she speaks.
“Anglerond, love hold on. I need to throttle Te’Teh for scaring the shot out of me.” Te’Teh can see that she’s more annoyed than anything else, her words an empty threat.
“Thank you for checking on me, Im fine. I came out this far to have an intimate conversation with my fiancé.” She lift an eyebrow at the younger girl, waiting to see what she’ll do.
Anglerond groans in a mix of humor and annoyance, “Why is it Te’Teh, at least if it was Rabbit she would have picked up what you are doing?”
Te’teh crouches down beside Key. “Do you want some help with that? I got paid by these two merchants to talk dirty to them… funny enough sometimes they just wanted me to use an accent and even just recite a list of groceries. Although I did get pretty good at the dirty talk. Some people find it awkward to try and speak dirty to someone, especially if they can’t see them.” Te’teh’s face is warm with enthusiasm and wanting to help.
Key rolls her eyes more surprised by how she’s not surprised by Te’Teh’s words than the words themselves. She responds to Anglerond first.
“Oh, she knows exactly what was going on. She just isn’t great with social cues.” She’s looking at Te’Teh while she talks and smiles broadly at her before speaking directly at her.
“No thank you Te’Teh. We were doing just fine on our own. Believe it or not I have done things like this before.”
Te’teh cocks her head to the side, watching Keyleth with red pupiless eyes. Her brows draw forward and her mouth gives a surprised look as she makes a realization. “Did I interrupt your talk? Do you want me to leave?”
“That’s up to Anglerond.” She switches her focus back to the stone.
“Love, do you want her to go or are you okay taking care of your needs on your own?” Her expression glazes over for a moment lost in the thought. She blinks a few times and refocuses looking at Te’Teh.
“Who sent you to check on me?”
Anglerond groans even more in a mix of humor and annoyance, “I assume my love you would be more comfortable not doing this with Te’Teh probably listening in, even if she walks away. We can try later if you want, and if you don’t that is fine too. I love you.”
Te’teh smiles at Keyleth. “Rabbit told me to check on you, she just got back from scouting out and she seems slightly agitated, not that she would talk to me about it. She did say everything is ok, she just wanted to verify everyone was present.” Te’Teh sits down beside Key, smiling.
Key frowns in sympathy and sighs. Talking just to Anglerond she says:
“I’d rather do this when we are completely alone. But I’d still like to keep talking. The sound of your voice relaxes me.” She smiles at looks at the woman next to her.
“How agitated did Rabbit seem?”
Anglerond chuckles, “I am here for you my love. I just like hearing your voice as well, it reassured me you are ok.”
Te’teh is quiet for a moment as she thinks. She turns to Key, making herself more comfortable she speaks. “Rabbit is harder for me to read since she went through the pain box. She got back from scouting and she was quiet, didn’t even go over and maul Luke with kisses, she just went to the fire, pulled her gives off and was talking to herself in what I assume is abyssal. Ever since her thing I sometimes find her awake at the fire and she looks different. I can’t tell you what is different but it is more unsettling then when she rages. Especially if you see her eyes at night and she doesn’t know you are looking at her. Don’t get me wrong I still love Rabbit, just it all feels different. But her coming back was just a feeling from me, like she couldn’t settle down.”
Key shivers. “Ive seen her at night like that, so has Anglerond. Im hoping some time and some extra training with the monks will help. Would you mind going to see if she would cone talk to me?” She gives Te’Teh a sweet smile and bats her eyelashes.
Te’teh nods to Key and smiles as she gets up. “Sure I can grab Rabbit, do you want me to disturb her if she is with Luke? Oh and if you want I have a magical toy that vibrates… you know if you want to do your thing with Anglerond. Or if nothing else I can take you to the store that makes them for people.” She gives Keyleth a wink and turns to go.
Key’s face goes a bit pink and she rolls her eyes again, shaking her head.
“No thank you Te’Teh. If I need vibrating toys I shop for them with the man I plan to use them with. If she’s settled and with Luke let her be. You’re more than welcome to come back to if you want.”
Te’teh raises an eyebrow and smiles up. “You know it is also supposed to be used for single playtime. Do you not know how to do it solo? Don’t worry I will go get Rabbit” She disappears quickly as she heads back to camp.
“Who has time for that with you showing up at inappropriate times.” She shouts jokingly into the dark after her. She resumes her normal tone to speak with Anglerond.
“Seriously that girl has a knack.” She shakes her head and changes the subject.
“I made friends with the local Orc tribe. They’re interested in talking about trade.”
Anglerond chuckles lovingly, “She still seems like a nice girl… trade with the orc horse tribes? That would be a coup, almost no one gets to trade like that. It would be an incredibly good thing for all of us. How did it happen?”
Key repositions to make herself comfortable again.
“They were very impressed by how I killed shit.” She laughs at her own joke.
“But seriously, we were able to get their war trophy back for them and I think their leader was impressed by that. AND she had the hots for Luke. Its not a forgone conclusion but she gave me a token to send with whatever trade emissary we have come back and she said she would talk to them. She seemed to not hate the idea which I took as a good sign.”
Anglerond answers in a smiling tone, “I am pretty sure your killing shit does help. It is a big deal to them. I also know that they appreciate leaders who are capable of the smiting.”
He is quiet for a few more moments, “Did everything turn out ok for Luke? An orc war-chieftain woman seems a bit terrifying. Especially one of the horse lords. Did Rabbit freak out at the Orc and try to kill her? Did Luke get back to his tent unbroken? The world needs to know these things…”
Key laughs softly.
“Rabbit was a bit freaked out by it but she handled it okay. Luke survived his encounter intact. I talked with Luke after and I think he’s going to talk with Rabbit about it when there is a quiet moment. How are things at home? Oh! I got them to sell me one of their horses. Ive decidedly to start collecting exotic horses.”
Anglerond chuckles, “At least your paladin didn’t get himself caught in a crossfire.”
He is quiet for a few more moments, “The horses is a good hobby, one that adventurers, other nobles and merchants can all identify with. I wholly support that hobby. I want you to know I would be ok if you find you need someone while you are out adventuring, I just wanted to make sure you know that is ok. You are young and haven’t really sown your oats yet.”
Key is quiet for a long moment caught off guard.
“That’s not something that Im interested in doing. I don’t feel the need to sew any oats. But if you’ve changed your mind about anything please let me know. I would understand.”
Anglerond is quiet for a moment,, “sweetheart, I don’t want anyone or anything else. I have the kids to keep my affection and I am not under one hundred and fifty, campaigning in foreign lands with the after kill buzz that can power you.. You are in your prime, I am comfortable and happy. I just want to see you taken care of emotionally while you are out… I guess Rabbit might fit some of that, being there emotionally but she is a bit of drama so maybe not easy all the time.”
“I love you. You’re half a world away and you’re worried about every detail of my well being. How did I get so lucky. I don’t need or want anyone else but you, even after a fight. So I’ll make sure you know when Im about a week from home so that you can get some extra sleep and drink lots of water so that I can lock you in a room for a week or two.” She gives him a husky laugh.
“Rabbit takes as care of me as best she can and Luke helps with the rest and I can always call you.”
Anglerond chuckles “Definitely give me the heads up, I want to make sure I can help you unwind from months of travel. You are right, I just want to make sure every aspect of you is happy, whatever it takes. Please call me if you need me, any time, any place, no matter what you or I are doing.”
Key smiles. “I can do that. Now that Ive told you all about what Ive been up to its your turn now. I want to live vicariously through you for a while.”
Anglerond begins to recount the last four days. It is obvious he loves the children as most of the days are filled with them. He also gives some insight into what is going on in the manor, mostly dealing with Nestrim and Sobhan trying to work out how to build out the manor. Alluvian seems to be doing fine, and any sign of her aunt or whatever that was is gone. As he wraps up his story about a half an hour later he does ask, “How do you feel with the universal bonds lifted from you? You are healthy right?”
Key listens intently, soaking up her connection to home and family. When he asks about the severed bond she takes a deep breath, closes her eyes and releases the breath slowly taking stalk of her inner workings.
“Honestly Ive never felt better. I have more energy. I fight better and am more focused. Watching the fall out from what we’ve done isn’t the hardest part. I worry we won’t be able to fix what we’ve done.”
Anglerond makes a reassuring sound, “Trust that you will fix it. I am willing for the payment to be made if it makes our children’s future free from any specific divine touch. No one deserves blind and worse yet… unknowing obedience. You did the right thing.”
She makes a noise somewhere between worry and frustration.
“But you and the babies aren’t free. The gods are sucking your life force away one drop at a time.” She pauses to get her anger under better control.
“Have you thought about going through?”
Anglerond’s calming voice is clear,, “I don’t think they are feeding on us like a vampire. I suspect whatever energy we give is a byproduct. .”
Key barks out a short laugh without humor.
“Either way, its not voluntary. I noticed you didn’t answer my question. Are you of the same mind as Rabbit? Do you think we’re sending the world to one of the hells in a hand basket.” By the time she’s done speaking there is a bit more humor in her tone.
Anglerond’s quiet lasts for some time as he thinks, “I am considering it. I have spent a long time anticipating when I die to join my children and my lost comrades in the afterlife. If this is all true then it might make it so I can’t see those people ever again. I logically want to follow you, but something inside makes me hesitate at destroying the idea of an afterlife and being with family and loved ones… he hesitates saying more, unsure how to vocalize his thoughts and feelings.
Key is quiet for a long time and careful when she finally does speak.
“Then I think you shouldn’t go through and neither should the children. I don’t want to separate them from you ever, even in the afterlife. I can handle not going myself…” She trails off, excess emotion leaking into her voice.
“Its not something I had considered.” She says when she is able to speak in a clear happy voice with just a tinge of sadness.
Anglerond’s voice has earring emotions in its undertone. It is clear to Key that he isn’t angry at her but at the gods, “I am not willing to be separated without you. That doesn’t work for me. When you get back I will step into it. I need you. The children will decide when they are older and we have enough connections right now to keep them healthy and safe… and even brought back if we need to to give them the opportunity. I will not lose you now that we have each other. his voice is solid and unmovable like granite.
“I can’t, I won’t make you choose between me and your first family.” She stops herself from continuing. Anglerond knows her well enough to know that she’s doing some sort of mental exercise in an attempt to let logic reassert itself.
“Why don’t we talk about this when we are together again. It will give both of us the opportunity to think about this fully and have a rational conversation about it. There are obviously pros and cons to both sides. Does that sound good to you?”
Anglerond’s voice becomes stern towards Key, “We will talk when you get here, but just to remind you that you mean everything to me, and I will make whatever choice I need to make. That is to stay with you. You aren’t the runner up in my life, you are my life, and that means my afterlife as well. But it does sound good and we can talk when you get home my love. Is there anything else? The babies need to be put to bed, but I have a few more minutes.”
Key is quiet for a moment.
“I love you. Kiss the babies for me. We should pick out names for them when I get home. I did hear everything you said. I don’t see myself as less than, but I don’t ever want you to think I would make you choose.”
Anglerond’s voice becomes soft, filled with love, “You are not forcing me to do anything. You are my world, my breaking dawn and my falling twilight. There are a lot of similarities between you and Rabbit I never realized until the last year. Maybe it is how close you two are or how much you travel together but you sound a lot like Rabbit when she talks about Luke, how she should come second. Would you let her say something like that. Let her say that she doesn’t want to cause Luke any problems… oh wait a minute I know for a fact that you have told her she is wrong… You matter, I love you and you just have to accept it.”
“I will.” She nods with conviction.
“That was quite the poetic speech. I didn’t know you had it in you. I love you, now go put the babies to bed. If you let it go much longer you’ll have a rough day tomorrow. I’ll try and call again before we head down into the hold.”
Anglerond’s tone is warm, “You bring out the poetic speech in me, trust me I never was able to do it before meeting you. I love you, please call me whenever you can. I will drop whatever I am doing. Your babies say they love you, I love you” There is a brief sound of babies in the background evidencing that he has the babies sleeping in his bedroom. Quietly Anglerond shuts the connection.
Key waits until the connection is completely gone. She sighs whispers ‘I miss all three of you’, then slides the stone back in her bag. She gets up and goes back toward the fire with a smile.
