Key moves slowly but gracefully into the room. She much more light of foot than anyone in her advanced state of pregnancy has a right to move. She pulls out the map she made with the help of her dwarven magic item. She slides it into a folio with the others like it and puts it back where she pulled it from, then pulls out another map to stretch out on the table. She weighs down the corners, then sits back down propping her feet up on a chair. She lets out a sigh and leans jer head back as if exhausted.
The door opens quietly into the map room as a slender older elf steps inside and looks around. In his hands are a bouquet of magnolia flowers and some chocolates he had bought for Key. His face covered in a finely manicured and short beard with a bit of grey that ran through it.
His face lights up in a smile when he sees his love and he comes over and sets both presents in her lap. Sitting opposite her feet he doesn’t say much, waiting for Key, instead he starts peeling off her boots to massage her feet.
She lets out a grown of pure pleasure and just sits there quietly enjoying the sensation. When she can muster the energy to speak she lifts the flowers to her nose and inhales deeply. She sets her gifts down on the table beside her and leans forward to give Anglerond a long kiss.
“Thank you for everything. I think we’re getting to the point that we should pick out names. I haven’t thought much about it. Do you have any ideas?”
Anglerond smiles at Key and sits beside her after the kiss. He takes her hand in his and nods, “I have a few options, do you want to avoid the cliche of giving them family names? Maybe start out with a new outlook for the family?”
She smiles and rubs her thumb along his affectionately.
“Yes, lets avoid that. Let them live up to their own names.” She shakes her head.
“Im horrible at this already. My mind is completely blank. Maybe there is a book filled with names somewhere in the library.” She hefts herself out of the chair and starts scanning the shelves with a finger.
Anglerond motions to a bookshelf with a wide assortment of types of books, “I habe collected as many name books as I can find. Even if it’s in a language you don’t like we can translate.”
Key grabs a few books from the shelf that Anglerond points to. She goes still for a moment then spins to face him.
“How would you feel about naming them after the great warriors from all the different elven communities? We can write them all and ask for a list of their greatest warriors.” She looks excited.
“We should probably talk with Nestrim first.”
Anglerond nods thinkingly at Key, “We could do that, or we could give them names that there won’t be any expectations for them to live up to. A great warrior name from any society would always be held to them and their performance, it is natural. Do you think you will marry someone else? If so, you will probably have to name their children after someone famous or someone family orientated. I am happy to name them whatever you like, but I might be more interested in something pretty, or something that doesn’t have any baggage around it.”
Key nods and returns to her seat with her books. She hand ine to him and opens the other and starts flipping pages. She pulls out a piece of paper and some parchment.
“You’re right. We should let them be normal for as long as possible. Im really happy that they will be growing up with all kinds of children around them, not just elves.”
Anglerond chuckles to himself, “This will be interesting, a combination of tieflings and elves, not much else though. We don’t have humans other than Jack traveling with us, no dwarves, gnomes, halflings or orcs. Still pretty one sided on things. It is just the snooty race and the race that gets in trouble race.”
Key’s cheeks turn pink.
“I guess you’re right. I’d like to expose them to as many other races as possible. There will be drow and devils in the house as well. We could offer to teach school for the servants children.” She pauses and looks up from her book.
“I might be putting the cart before the horse though right? Besides I wouldn’t want to step on your toes. This will be mainly your job.”
Anglerond raises an eyebrow, “You cannot really step on my toes, they will be your babies too. We might bicker over specifics but don’t ever think you don’t have input. I don’t mind adding servants children in as well, it would give them extra children to play with and I want to encourage them not to look down on anyone.”
Key leans back putting her bare feet in his lap. She smiles, dragging the her book into her own lap. She starts to scribble down names as she talks.
“That was my thought too. I don’t want them to take for granted what they have or forget that they are servants too. What do you think of Almarian or Haleth for a girl?”
Anglerond smirks, “Out of the two let’s stick with Haleth, I dated a Almarian for a short while… that didn’t go well.”
His smirk just gets larger, “It was a complicated young male situation.”
Key puts down her pen and looks up at Anglerond a smirk on her lips. She raises one eyebrow.
“Sounds like there’s a story there. Do tell please.” She nudges him with a bare foot playfully.
Anglerond looks down, a large smile still on his face, “First, let’s clarify that she wasn’t a love of my life, but we were close, we were good friends. She was the daughter of a local farmer, she showed me a lot of things about life. She was a little older than me and we stayed close even after she got married.
His smile just gets larger, “Her father beat my ass more than once though, and she likes to edge things on. She was rough but I don’t regret her friendship.”
Her other eyebrow goes up. “Rough? It sounds like she encouraged you to do bad things that got you into trouble. Trouble that got your ass kicked. My love I think you may have some rose colored glasses on.” She laughs softly.
“Im glad you knew her though. Everything you did in your life brought you here to me.”
Anglerond leans forward and kisses Key, “You are an incredibly smart lady. So we naming our daughter, if its a daughter, Haleth now? I do like that name.”
“Its an option. We should have several. There is more than one baby in here.” She pats her belly.
“Im sure of that. This belly is way to large for just one baby. Haleth is a good start. Im having trouble with boy names. You should open that book and start picking some things out.” She pokes his belly with a toe.
Anglerond looks surprised momentarily and thinks. His face does seem to sadden for a moment and then he smiles again at a memory, “Would you consider the name Aeson? It isn’t a famous name, no one famous to live up to. No meaning to have to strive for.
Key tilts her head in thought. Then scribbles the name down.
“I’ll add it to the list. Where did the name come from?”
Anglerond gets quiet for a moment, shifts a bit in his seat and then smiles again at Keyleth, “Maybe one of these days we can sit and have a drink and I will give you the whole story. However, suffice to say Aeson was a very good friend I met when I joined the 19th Desert Crusade. We were trained together and went over and found the orcs and desert elves. He died in a small village while we were there. He saved my life more than once, and he definitely did on the day he died.”
Anglerond looks away momentarily embarrassed by the emotion that had slipped out, then he looks back, “I understand if that falls under family names you don’t want and I won’t be offended if you veto it.”
Key leans forward and puts a gentle hand on his cheek.
“Its a lovely name. I’ll keep it on the list. It’s okay to feel what you feel. He was your brother in arms. He sounds like he was closer than family. I won’t ever make you feel ashamed about any ofvyour feelings about anything.” She pulls her hand back and leans back in her chair smiling at him.
Anglerond stops momentarily, cocking his head like he hears something. He stands and walks over to the window and when he opens it he listens to the singing from the parapet. He turns and looks quizzically at Key, “Is that Sargon and what is he doing?”.
Key hefts herself out of her chair and moves over to the window. She sticks her head out, then pulls it back in a few moments later.
“Sounds like singing to me.” She grins broadly and moves to go sit down in her chair again.
“He’s at the top of the lighthouse. I would assume it’s something godly in nature. If you want to go check it out don’t feel obligated to babysit me. We’re not going anywhere very fast or very soon.” She pats her swollen belly in illistation of her point.
Anglerond moves his chair closer and reaches out to pat and rub her belly lovingly, “Are you kidding me, you are going to have to order me away from you. Do you know where you are going next?”
She chuckles. “Well I think that your in for a boring few months. As I get larger it gets harder to move. Im glad we portaled home. I would not be happy on a ship.” She shrugs one shoulder.
“Im not sure if we’ve made any plans yet. I think Luke is dealing with his own parenting issues and if he’s not with Izzy Im sure Rabbit is going to try her best to be pregnant before we go anywhere.” She rubs at the had that housed her tattoo, but is now bare.
“Maybe we should have everyone over for dinner and discuss next steps.”
Anglerond leans over and takes her no longer tattooed hand in his and he looks at it. He looks at Key questioningly, “Did you and Rabbit have a fight?” A look of concern for Key on his face, he knows how close to two women are.
She shakes her head and tries to blink back sudden tears. She wipes them away with her free hand and mutters something that includes an expletive.
“No, it was gone after we freed Rabbit. I figured it was a byproduct of being freed. Severd all her ties to anyone, not just shitty demons. I don’t know why it makes me sad but it does a bit. Not because a resent her freedom, it waa just a comfort to have her there even when she wasn’t there physically.” She wipes her eyes again.
“Im just being hormonal and over emotional.”
Anglerond gets up and walks behind Key, wrapping both arms around Keyleth he hugs her tightly, being careful of her belly he kisses the back of her neck, “Don’t worry my love, I bet she wants to come back. I know the connection helped her a lot. While she might not be connected to a demon, she is now going to suffer the PTSD of 400 years of horror.”
He hesitates for a moment thinking, then he slides around in front of Keyleth, “She is going to need you now far more then she did before. She isn’t connected to that demon, she doesn’t have something in the back of her head buffering her. She is alone in there. I didn’t have even a fraction of the terror she went through and I almost lost myself, now she is going to have to deal with it by herself in her head. This might be worse for awhile then she was before. She is alone in her head for the first time in more than four centuries. She needs her sister.”
Key toys with the hem of her shirt, uncomfortable. “Now I really feel like an asshole. I wasn’t thinking about her at all. You’re right, I thought it might be tough for her for a while but I hadn’t thought about quite the way you put it. I guess in a weird way I thought she had been taken apart and put back together minus all the bad stuff. That’s pretty unrealistic though.” She gets up out of the chair with effort needing to walk. She begins to pace in front of the table while she talks, occasionally looking up at Anglerond as she does.
“I really didn’t think about you and what it meant for you emotionally to leave the Rangers either. Im sorry if I wasn’t there if you needed me. I hope in the future you’ll make me stop and think if Im doing something selfish.”
Anglerond looks horrified at Key and what she says, blaming himself he gets up quickly and puts his hands on her shoulders looking down, “You were there for me, I didn’t feel bad leaving the rangers. You were nothing but supportive and loving. I wasn’t meaning then. I was meaning when I came back from the crusades, my first wife managed to haul my drunk ass out of the tavern. You have been with me and haven’t neglected me my love. As for Rabbit, I didn’t mean you shouldn’t work with your own pain. Of course you hurt, its hard losing that connection. Just as hard for you. I was more meaning for future when Rabbit’s come down from the excitement of being freed is when it will hit her, right when she isn’t expecting it.”
Key stops pacing and looks at him for a moment trying to reconcile her feelings with what he said. She just nods her head once.
“Right again. I’ll talk to her and see if she wants to redo the ritual. Should we wait until after the babies are born?”
Anglerond smirks and looks down, “I am sure I am giving the exact opposite response that Luke would give you, but I would get that bond before either of you give birth. Especially if Rabbit gets pregnant. The bond means they are connected to Rabbit and by default to her children. They will be closer then blood. I realize the tragedies written by our playwrights would probably use this as a bad thing, but I think it would be good. I would love our children to be connected to Ira that closely.”
Key’s smile grows at the thought of Lukes face in response to this plan.
“I love how your mind works. But would the children still have that bond with hers if she isn’t pregnant when we redo the ritual?”
Anglerond chuckles, “I am sure it’s better if you are both pregnant so the children will have a bond with you and Rabbit, and even if Rabbit has kids later they will be bonded that way if not together. I am fully behind you on this.”
Key’s eyes twinkle with mischief. “Should we go find Rabbit?” She starts to make her way toward the door then stops.
“Or maybe send a servant, because Im not sure if I can walk all the way to the warrens.”
Anglerond rolls his eyes “Or you do like anyone else in your condition and with your resources that you take a carriage. I don’t think you are in any danger in there so it isn’t an issue..”
She opens her mouth then shuts it. She blinks a few times.
“It honestly hadn’t occurred to me. It feels weird to have that kind of stuff at my disposal. Right now I’ll get over it.”
Anglerond Smiles “I realize we have debt, but we are also rich my love. You are not a poor monk escort. You have been like that for years and it is ok.”
She squares her shoulders and smiles as she makes her way toward the door. She looks over her shoulder to make sure he’s following.
“I think it better for everyone if I hold on to the poor starving Monk in my head. Every time I try to move outside that mindset I step in shit of some kind.”
Anglerond Laughs as they leave the room “I am pretty sure Nestrim wishes you would act like you are rich.”
Key rolls her eyes and reaches out to take Anglerond’s arm to steady herself as she walks. She hasn’t seen her feet in weeks and seams a bit disconcerted by it.
“Its a fine line I have a hard time navigating. As Evidenced by my previous blunders. Im not hopeful that is a tightrope I’ ever be able to walk.”
Anglerond appears a little stern “Why would you say that about yourself, you are smart, warm and more than. Capable. You kick serious ass, not much difference in a verbal aspect.””
She lifts an eyebrow. “Im not being self deprecating. Im stating a fact. Backed up by the way that Nestrim crawls all over me every time I assert myself in any way. I get an eyeroll or a lecture. So Ive kind Of decided not to do it. I’ll check with Nestrim before I open my mouth.” She smiles up at him, leaning heavily on him as the go down the stairs.
Anglerond opens his mouth to talk but closes it. Thinking to himself that he didn’t want to get into what would probably become an argument here. Instead he smiled at Key “As you say beautiful. Besides I have a feeling if we make it over to Luke’s you will get a chance to speak to Nestrim as well.”
Key having read his body language gives him a look.
“I will make an effort to read some books on etiquette or have Nestrim set aside some time to teach me as well. Or maybe Alluvian would be willing to do it.” She makes it to the bottom of the stairs before elbowing him in the ribs.
“Happy Old Man?” She quips playfully.
Anglerond smirks as he looks at Key he the. Leans over and kisses her“I am happy for every moment I get with you, nothing else matters
“You’re really trying to avoid an argument. I promise not to explode if I get mad. I may look like it but Im not a bomb.” She looks down at her stomach then back to Anglerond.
“Although I really can’t imagine getting much larger. At times I do feel like Im bursting at the seams. When are you planning to change your name? Are you still planning to change your name?”
Anglerond cannot hold back the laughing and bursts into peals of it as he looks at her when he recovers he is lifting his arms apologetically “I am so sorry, you just look uncomfortable, your waddling and angry and it is hilarious especially because I know the damage you could do to anyone you could catch… which would mainly be the paralyzed or bedridden….
He pauses for a moment expecting to be broken before he continues ”However I am indeed changing my name. I was thinking doing it in the same ceremony we name our babies. If you are ok with that.
She narrows her eyes but she doesn’t look truly angry.
“You have to meditate sometime and I know where you do it. That being said, it doesn’t make your statement any less true.” She shrugs a shoulder.
“Im fine either way. Don’t you want your own ceremony though?”
Anglerond shrugs as he talks “I am not sure. Most of the rituals I have done are quiet and now that you are an empress I am even less interested in making things very public. Of course I want you and any friends that are interested but I don’t want to be a focus. That should go to our children..
He nudged Key ”When we get over there I just wanted to warn you that all three, Luke, Rabbit and Nestrim disappeared into Luke’s new home mostly drunk and evidently very frisky. Just giving you a heads up so you know what to expect.
She looks up at him briefly as they exit the house and move toward the stables. She lets go of his arm and lets her hands rest on top of her belly.
“Worst case we’ve gone for a nice ride through the city. If they are in disposed we can come back later.” She grins with accomplishment.
“Im glad they have figured things out. It would make me worry less about them if they moved into the manor though.”
Anglerond chuckles to himself “I am not sure if we might be safer there. The luck of sekhmet wrapped in a paladin and a little ball of death are fairly safe there. I know they are wrapping up the tunnel..
He smiles Key ”Luke might appreciate the interruption we provide. Sometimes the next morning after a threesome is awkward. Especially if the other two aren’t getting along.
She stops short of the yard nearest the stables. Shock and amusement lights her face and she rubs her belly unconsciously.
“And how, love of my life, would you know that? I think that’s a story I need to here now.”
Anglerond smiles a little unsure “I wasn’t sure how you were about stories of previous relationships. You don’t mind?”.
She reaches out and takes his hand.
“The past is the past. You would not be who you are today if you hadn’t been through what you’ve been through. Its a waste to worry about something you can not change. I don’t want you to hide anything from me. I want to know everything about you.”
Anglerond blushes a little “I was very experimentative and did a lot of things when I was younger, so I probably have too many stories. The one I was thinking about was with A’tara a very experienced warrior and her ex-wife Stel. They were very formidable desert warriors who had signed on as auxiliaries for our unit. We had been drinking a lot. I was young, thought I was being suave but it turns out it was Stel wanting to mess with her ex. So we all slept together. The situation was tense the next morning. It resulted in a month of drama… and some good sex before I left to go to Manama, a small Katabania city to continue the crusade.”.
Key waves to a stable hand and when they rush over, asks him to have a carriage made ready. She looks back to Anglerond with a grin.
“Why didn’t you run for the hills when you found out you were in the middle of drama like that?” Understanding dawns and her eyes flick down to his groin then back up to his face.
“The sex was that good huh?” She giggles.
Anglerond chuckles “I was young, and until I got older and found my center I was very vulnerable to women, especially strong women who fight.”. He looks over Key, obviously believing she is in that category. “Maybe that is still there.”
“They were actually pretty kind to me, also they wanted to do things that no other girl was interested in before. Also, they were very attractive.” He shrugs, “I wonder if they are still alive down there, when we left we abandoned all of our auxiliaries and they had to survive without us, even though they threw in with us one hundred percent.” His eyes become a little more serious as he considers the likely outcome for them after the Western Elven Armies left the desert.
Key looks sad for a moment but she banishes the feeling as quickly as it appears.
“Everyone has a type. Maybe not me. The two major relationships Ive been in, the men have been polar opposites.” She frowns in thought.
Anglerond smiles at Key “Don’t feel bad about them. They were smart and I am sure they are still down there… hmm you know they would make good guards if they are around. They are incredibly loyal.” He thinks about it a bit.
He turns and looks at Key again, “We really aren’t polar opposites, both of us are fanatics, both signed up and pledged our lives. Neither Glorion nor myself are the most creative really, we are soldiers. To be honest I still don’t know what broke in him, if he had not been broken we would have been very similar.”
She shivers, shakes her head, then looks up at him and smiles. She seems to not want to talk about Glorian so she picks up the other thread instead.
“You think so? Do you know where they might be now? I would love to give anyone from those units a place if they want it. We should talk to Nestrim about it. Would that be awkward for you?”
Anglerond looks sadly at Key “We need to talk about that before you leave again. I can’t let you hurt and blame yourself for that.” He looks away for a moment indicating he won’t talk about that anymore for now.
He turns and looks at Key again, “That wouldn’t be bad, we have scatterings of loyalists over there still. Some are still loyal to this day. Definitely we should talk to Nesterim.”
She lets the unsaid part of the conversation go for the moment. Her features become more animated.
“Its not the desert but I think we can make them comfortable. It would be nice to have all the elves represented in our guard. It would be a good excuse to visit the desert again. Its kind of growing on me.”
Anglerond sighs, knowing the one he loves has to leave soon enough and dreading when she does., “I think that is a good idea, while your out try and pick up more elves from other places too. We give you a hard time but you do meet a lot of people and things work out, at least enough that we ca. Then get in contact with them.”
Key looks amused, then uncomfortable. Her expression turned inward she reaches out and grabs Anglerond’s hand and places it on a spot in her belly where a tiny limb suddenly pushes outward.
“We’ve got at least one monk in there.” She takes a deep breath and lets it out.
“Id like to think my political face planting is my signature move. Its how I let everyone know that Im ready to open up negotiations.” She winks.
Anglerond smiles and feels for the child and enjoys the moving baby. He chuckles at Key’s self deprecating humor. He thinks for a moment before talking, “Are you going to be ok if any or all of them decide to not be monks or warriors but stay home and be normal people? Part of me really hopes none of them becomes warriors, adventurers or any of it..” He grimaces at the possibility of having to bury another child before he passes on.
She pats the hand resting on her belly.
“They can be whatever it is that makes them happy and we will be proud no matter what.” She watches the carriage pull up and waits for the door to be opened for her before hefting herself inside.
“That being said, we can teach them to do whatever they do safely. I don’t think it will be against the rules to try and mitigate disaster.”
Anglerond climbs up after Key, “You are already a better mother than 90% of the nobility.
Key gives him an odd bewildered look.
“How so? I guess Im just reacting in a way that makes sense to me.”.”
Anglerond chuckles, “The fact you will truly love and be proud of a child no matter what. Even your mom and dad had expectations for your siblings and they are incredibly forgiving.”
“Im not sure why money would keep you from loving your children.” She shakes her head, disgusted.
“That’s part of being rich I hope I never understand.”
Anglerond shakes his head emphatically, “You misunderstand nobility. Sure, there are some that don’t care for their children just like the poor. No, the biggest reason for the treatment to family is due to duty and responsibility. It is when duty and tradition become more important than the individuals. We are just as inflexible about duty, we are just lucky enough to be able to work around of it right now.”
Key nods her understanding.
“We are, but we have a few months yet to work on that inflexibility. Priorities are about to shift in a big way. I don’t see either one of us being terrible, unloving parents. Of course now Ive just jinxed us.”
Anglerond smiles, “You didn’t jinx anything. I thought you didn’t believe in that crap.” He gives her a mischievous smile, since he is the one out of the two who does believe in the gods.
She sticks her tongue out at him and shoves her feet into his lap smiling.
