Key strides in and walks over to a nearby servant. She makes some whispered requests for food and drink, then starts throwing open windows to let in the sea breeze and the sounds of the ocean. Once done, she closes the door most of the way and sits down to wait for Alluvian who should be right behind her. She’s placed herself in front of the windows facing the door by habit. She pats a seat next to her in invitation for Anglerond to sit.
Anglerond steps into the room and takes a seat. He is keeping words to himself and is still shocked at Alluvian’s words to her best friend, guardian… lover?
Alluvian’s walk is more assured then Key remembers. More custom to giving orders and having them listened to, rather than a teenager who gets in trouble. Whether it is a ghost of her experience with Mori or the way she could be at home seems irrelevant. As she walks by the departing servant she stops her, whispers a few more things and then sits across from Keyleth, comfortable in her own authority, “I am really happy for you and Anglerond, I do hope it is something you can work out with him.”
Key smiles and looks over to Anglerond then back to her sister.“There’s nothing to work out. We are open and honest with each other. If I can marry him I will and if I can’t he’s still my husband in all the ways that matter.” Her expression shifts to one of an older sister.
“What was that with Nightscale? You’ve been inseparable best friends since we brought you home, then in an instant you shift and dismiss her like a common servant. Why couldn’t she be in here with us?”
Alluvian pauses for a moment thinking. Cocking her head to her side she shakes it “That isn’t the first time sister. Sometimes she can drain my patience and I need space. She follows me around like a puppy. I don’t mind normally but every once in awhile I need a break. She isn’t a common servant though, she is my bodyguard. Not that she did a good job of it before. Nestrim hasn’t been able to find someone to take over for her yet.”
She looks around and touches her head a couple of times. “I feel better if that helps, sometimes I have found I can actually see ok.” With that she pulls her blindfold off of her eyes, blinking to the unaccustomed light. Her eyes the color of storm clouds.
When she sees her sister a smile breaks out on her face, “It is good to see you sister.”
Key smiles at the first site of her eyes in months.“Im glad you’re feeling better. Its good news. I’d love to talk to you about your recovery after we finish discussing Nightscale. Have you thought about how it will effect her to be replaced? She has some pretty intense feelings for you. She also has her own issues to work through about your captivity. I thought the two of you were close?”
Anglerond sits quietly, discomfited by what he is watching and unsure where to go with this. During this Alluvian shrugs noncomittally, still not noticing smiling as she talked “Things change, I am growing up and its time to be a ruler, not a little girl.”
For a moment she reaches up to her head like it hurts and then she smiles again,“She is young still, she will catch up eventually, or she will be gone. Either way I have to start acting like who I am supposed to.” She starts tapping the chair arm waiting for the drinks.
Key’s face frosts over with disapproval. She sits up straight gives her a long look then leans back and throws an arm over the back of the chair Anglerond is sitting in in an attempt to look relaxed.
“The crown you inherit should have nothing to do with how you treat people. Quite the opposite, you should hold yourself to a higher standard than others because of your station. Nightscale has serious feelings for you. If you want to act like a grown up than part of that is sitting her down to have an adult conversation about what each of you want out of your relationship.” She shakes her head and takes in a deep breath. She lets it out and wipes a hand over her face.
“This is not at all like you. You went from the Alluvian that I know to this in the blink of an eye.” She eyes the discarded blindfold then looks back to her sister.
“Is the light hurting your eyes? Do you have a headache?”
Alluvian shakes her head “No headaches, I can think more clearly now. I feel better than I have since I got captured.”
Her eyes are still cloudy and Key can see that Alluvian has a temper. She isn’t mad at Keyleth, but she seems angry about Night Scale ,“I appreciate learning what I can. However, I have been a noble for a long time and I know what is best between us. I have been clear to her where she stands.” She seems flat in her words, almost struggling to say them.
Key shrugs the shoulder not draped over a chair. “I guess you might want to talk to Luke about it then. Give him a heads up so he can watch out for her. When I talked to her she was in a petty fragile state. She should be handled with care.” Most of the irritation drains from her features, just leaving a tinge of sadness.
“I’ll talk to Nestrim. Anglerond can pick out a new body guard if you think that’s best. He’ll know who the best candidates are. You should have more than one in any case. How are your visions? Are they under control?”
Alluvian looks down at the blindfold, she plays with it with the fingers on her left hand, several thoughts obviously go through her head “They are getting under control. I think I can suppress it totally soon enough. Just need to take a bit more control over myself and it will be fine. For now I will need to keep it with me and wear it when control slips, but it will change.”
She hesitates and seems to be struggling with something. She closes her eyes and her mouth tightens for a few moments. After those few seconds she opens her eyes and her smile gets even larger, there is a curve to the smile that bothers Key. “Things are starting to go my way. Maybe I won’t stand outside in that damn garden so often. I am tired of the outside, and I am tired of my clothes, I think I am going to order new clothes be made for me.” She winks at her sister.
Key narrows her eyes a fraction. She moves the arm over Anglerond’s chair into his lap and squeezes his thigh in a way that ask him if he’s paying attention without words. She leans forward taking in every minute detail of her.
“Before you go replacing a wardrobe that you just aquired a few months ago we should speak with Nestrim about it first.” She cocks her head a bit.
“What do you mean by things are finally going your way? That’s an interesting turn of phrase given the situation. You could have used something like: ‘Im starting to feel more like myself’ or ‘things are really looking up now’. What made you choose those words?
Anglerond seems clueless, but there is something about his mannerisms that lets Key know he is watching too.
Alluvian gives her sister a smile, “I am constantly fighting with the memories of Mori and what he did. It is like a constant push back and forth. I am finally accepting myself and getting control over my fear. I am starting to not feel clausterphobic and having to stand outside no matter the weather. I am also starting to feel it is ok to put away what I used to do. I was too much of a tomboy. Now that I am an adult I don’t need childish things. I don’t need to sneak down to fighter practice, or into Nestrim’s rooms to spy on him with Night Scale. I am sure Nestrim will be happy I stop with the pranks.”
“I think he’ll be happy when you find yourself.” She leans back in her chair, some of the tension draining, but there is still a wary cast to her gaze.
“Right now you seem to be fluctuating between extremes. Right now your wearing your ‘disregard for others feelings skin’. I’ll be happy to see this one go. I hope you don’t feel the need to completely reinvent yourself. There were pieces of the old Alluvian I quite liked.” There seems to be a bit of deliberate button pushing in her tone.
Key can tell Anglerond is not happy at all, he is quiet and on alert.
Alluvian shakes her head, “I wouldn’t count on that sister. Things are changing. I am feeling more myself and I think I like my new self better. A Queen needs to be respected and maybe feared a little, and that wasn’t the way I was.” She shivers, as if the thought of how she was before was revolting.
Key shakes her head. “That’s sad. I’ll miss all those traits. Some of them would have helped make you a good queen. All I can say is that if you continue down a colder, harsher path you may loose some of the things you cherish. I understand the need to grow up. But it need not be done by shedding your skin completely.”
Anglerond shakes his head subtly to Key while taking a drink Alluvian begins talking again but seems to catch herself. She stops and watches Key for several moments. Her poise and calm not the Alluvian she knows, then she smiles almost belatedly, “I am sorry Key, I wasn’t meaning I would become a complete bitch. Also I won’t dump Night Scale, I think I am just a bit anxious is all.” Her tone has shifted to something very close to Alluvian, but as if she is trying it on, instead of it being natural. She seems to be playing with the blindfold with her left hand a lot.
Key relaxes. Anglerond can tell from his points of contact with her that there is tention there still. She’s relaxed into the calm wariness she adopts before a fight. Still taking in her surroundings, but to all outward appearances she totally relaxed.
“Im glad to hear that. I would dearly miss the woman you used to be.” She motions to a servant and whispers something in her ear. The servant scurrys out of the room and she shifts her attention back to Alluvian.
“So you plan to keep Nightscale as one of your body guards?”
The servant scurries off while Anglerond looks dispassionate and bored. However, he has shifted his right hand to be free at his side.
Alluvian sighs and sits back, holding her forehead for a moment as she breaths hard, as if she hurts a bit. It passes soon enough and she looks up at Key, her smile a bit bigger, “I am sorry sister, I still get headaches and a bit disorientated. Tell me how things are going for you, maybe it will distract me enough to ignore the headache I have.” She picks up her wine class with her left hand and deftly takes a sip, sitting back to listen to her sister.
//Out of game note – Alluvian is incredibly clumsy (never would make a good thief) and she is very strongly right handed. She jokes about not even able to masturbate with her left hand when asked about it.
Anglerond can feel Key’s tension grow when Alluvian picks up her wine glass left handed. She picks up the decanter and tops off Alluvian’s wine glass and leans back in her chair, limbs loose.
“Im sorry you have a headache. Should you put your blindfold back on? Would that help?” She takes a sip from her water glass, but doesn’t take her eyes from the girl in front of her.
“We are doing fine. We’re gearing up to go back on the road again. We’re just enjoying the time we have whike we have it.”
Alluvian takes another drink and stops for a moment, a look of confusion crossing her face. The look passes soon enough but she awkwardly transitions her glass to her right hand and sets it down. She stares at them for a few moments trying to work something out, like she had woken up. Then the smile returns and she sits back comfortably, “I don’t suppose I could go with you to watch Rabbit get freed? She has been visiting me almost daily since we got back. I think she was worried how I was doing… I think she might like me…” Alluvian’s face has a more mischievous smile, it is almost right… almost.
Key lifts an eyebrow. “I think you already know the answer to that question. Third time won’t be the charm in this case. I have no doubt that she likes you. I think she might see a bit of herself in you.” She gives her a wary smile.
Alluvian chuckles and begins talking about day to day things. She seem to be getting annoyed with the clink sounds her tongue piercing is making and after a short while she growls and stops. She messes around with the ring until she is able to disconnect it from her tongue. She disgustedly dumps it onto the coaster for her wine glass , “I think I am done with that. Tired of it clicking on my teeth.” she smiles up at her sister as she takes another drink
Key watches as she pulls the jewelry out of her mouth. She looks a bit surprised that she gave up on going with them to the desert so easily.
“That’s it? No more pushing? You’re just going to accept that the answer is no? Wow, well in that case subject change incoming. You still haven’t answered my question from before. Do you want Nightscale to stay on as a bodyguard? Or should we pick out 4 new ones for you?”
Alluvian shrugs, and looks up, “I have a lot to do here,I feel like I am behind where I should be. Luke and you have told me no already and it is pretty clear I won’t be allowed to go anyways. Fair enough. I will keep Night Scale, I think there are some effective things she can do. I will also pick up more guards, I don’t need Mori trying to visit me again.”
Alluvian looks at her glass of wine, while the servant comes in, walks up to Key and whispers for her ears only that Nestrim is currently indisposed talking with a noble from Kokand and he isn’t available for a little while. She ducks her head hoping Key won’t get too mad.
Alluvian watches this, unable to hear the conversation she looks curious “Is everything ok?”
Key smiles at the servant and touches her arm lightly in reassurance.“Thank you. Its okay, he’ll come when he can.” She looks to Alluvian, the smile still in place.
“I wanted to talk to our brother about your bodyguard situation and I had a few other things to tell him about.” She makes a vague gesture to herself.
“Everything is fine. We can definitely keep you busy here. I’ll have lots of thing that I’ll need help with while Im gone. I think Anglerond might not mind help setting up a nursery if you wouldn’t mind.”
Alluvian twitches momentarily and she holds her head as if struck by a headache. Breathing deep she recovers fairly quickly and squints as she looks over at the oil lamp beside her. Rubbing the side of her head she smiles up at Key painfully, “Sure, I think I might have time to help with that.” There doesn’t seem a lot of excitement at that option from her.
Key leans forward and puts her elbows on the table.“What is it that you have to catch up on? What’s so important that it makes it so you don’t have time to help prepare for future nieces and nephews?” She reaches out and puts her hand on her arm.
“Maybe you should put your blindfold back on.”
Alluvian looks into Key’s eyes, her eyes a stormy blue color. There is a twitch on her left eyebrow and she looks down at the blindfold, “I am sure I will have to put that back on, but Salkya and I worked out that I need to try to go longer and longer without it. I will try and push it off as long as possible. As for nephews and nieces, I already said I would help. You sound like you don’t think I won’t help, as long as I can make time.”
Key leans back face gone stoney. “You just seem less than enthusiastic. Its fine, don’t worry about it. It will happen with or without you in any case.” She picks up her glass and takes a long drink.
“The truth is I don’t think you’ll help even if you have time. I guess its just going to be an adjustment, getting used to the.. new you.”
Alluvian gets quiet, she listens for a few moments. She then takes her time responding, “Is there something wrong sis? Did I do something to offend you?”
Key gives the girl a direct look. “Im not offended. Im disappointed. The old Alluvian valued her family and friendships above all other things in her life. That’s not you anymore. I just need to get used to that.”
Alluvian sighs heavily, her gaze serious , “I value family above all others. I am not sure why you think that I don’t?.”
Key waves a negligent hand. “Actions speak louder than words. You dismiss your best friend treating her like a common servant. You might have time for the rest of your family if you can find the time in your busy schedule.” She sighs heavily, all the fight drained out of her.
“I don’t want to talk about it anymore. It is what it is. Lets change the subject.” She forces a smile onto her face.
Alluvian looks frustrated and a bit angry as she uncharacteristically lashes out , “Would you like to talk about your failings with family and friends? We could talk about your many misstatements that result in others getting hurt. Hells look what rabbit has gone through. It isn’t fair to attack me while claiming to love your family. Then again maybe that’s why you had to ask Nestrim to take over in negotiations, because you sure as hell cant engage in any sort of diplomacy.”
Key sighs, not at all upset over her response, just sad. “I know that I have stumbled and fallen on my face more than once. I understand that I was not the one to pay for my mistakes each and every time. I owe her a debt that I can never repay, but I will spend the rest of my long life doing so. But that’s between her and me. I know that I didn’t grow up in the court and it’s politics, I will never be able to swim in those waters comfortably. So I found someone to help me, to do it for me when needed. That is between Nestrim and me, and whom ever else we are dealing with in that moment. We were discussing you and your actions. Would you like to discuss that or can we change the subject?”
The normally incindiery and feisty Alluvian looks angry for a moment and then it’s gone. All anger and fire becomes a lake of ice. Her frozen smile more befitting the artic then a teenage girl, she settles back down and it seems like Keyleth and Anglerond are in the presence of a queen who has known others obedience for a long time“You are absolutely right sister. What would you like to talk about?” there is a hint of interest but nothing more.
Key stands up and begins closing the windows in the room. She talks over her shoulder as she works.“I don’t much care. Have to spoken with Mother and Father lately? Im sure they miss you.”
A look of real affection comes over Alluvian’s face, “I talk to… ” she hesitates for a short moment , “I talk to mother daily if not more. In fact she is going to come up to Kokand next week. I think dad is upset at the short notice but I guess she is anyways .”
She stops what she’s doing and turns around to looking at her. She looks pleasantly surprised.“Really? Nestrim didn’t mention it, does he know? He’ll want to make sure there are extra guards on duty for her visit, along with a long list of other things Im sure. I hope we’re still here when she arrives. It will be nice to see her.”
Alluvian thinks about it for a moment. “I don’t think so, I think she wanted to surprise him. She also didn’t want extra guards. She is bringing some personal guards, she wanted to just visit without fanfare.”
Key finishes with the windows and sits back down. She takes a sip of water and places tge cup back on the table.
“It will be a nice surprise. I think he’ll call for more guards anyway once she’s here. Maybe I can talk Luke into putting our trip off for a few days. Wouldn’t that be nice.” She smiles and winks.
Alluvian smiles. “Mother will be happy to see you, that is for sure. No reason you can’t wait a few days. Besides Luke’s dad is in town. Give him time to get to know each other. Oh I do have a boy I want you to meet. He is promising. Mom is bringing him to meet me personally.”
Key’s eyes go a bit wide. “Luke’s dad is here? How did you get that tid bit of information? I always seem to be the last to know.” She chuckles softly.
“Are we talking marriage material? Have you met this boy yet?”
Alluvian hesitates for a moment trying to remember how she knows.. “I think it was from trying to call Rabbit about something. She mentioned she can’t talk because they have a visitor…. as for the boy I believe he is. Mother found him for me and his position, his blood and his availability will really strengthen Arborion and give us a stronger claim on outside elven kingdoms.”
“Where is he from? I assume he’s not from Arborlon.” She draws her eyebrows together and speaks almost to herself.
“I wonder why she didn’t let me know she was coming?”
Alluvian Rolls her eyes playfully “She wanted to surprise you silly. She has presents for everyone. Same reason Nestrim, but I opened my big mouth here and spilled her secrets..”
Key seems to accept her explanation. “Okay then, tell me all about this boy you’re going to be asked to marry. I need details, as many as you have anyway.” She smiles and takes another sip of her water.
Alluvian shrugs and seems to be thinking about it“The normal, prince, in line for his throne. Family has similar powerbase that we have, but they have access to the northern seas where we can access the souther seas. He has like four titles. I think it will be good, but I am not confirming anything until I meet him.”
Key nods. “Huh, I hope that doesn’t mean you have to move home. I kind of like having you around.” She pauses to put together her thoughts.
“I look forward to giving him the third degree.”
Alluvian laughs, “I look forward to it.”
Anglerond has been watching outside the window, he leans over to key and whispers in her ear, “Night Scale is standing outside in the rain standing guard….” He seems angry under the smile, angry and worried.
Key shifts her attention to Anglerond, leaning closer to him so she can hear. Her eye dart quickly to her sister then down to the floor as she concentrates on what he’s saying. She stands up and walks over to the servant in the room and asks her quietly to fetch a robe and some towels. She goes back to the window and opens it wide.
“Nightscale, would you mind coming up here please? I need you.” She turns around and sits back down in her chair. She looks right at her sister and waits for her to protest.
Night Scale looks up confused, water dripping down her face and plastering her clothes against her body. Key can’t be sure but thinks Night Scake might be crying. She nods and heads into one of the doors on the building.
Alluvian looks confused and inquisitive “What is going on? Why is Night Scale outside in the rain? Didn’t I tell her to just leave for the night?”
Key lifts an eyebrow at Alluvian.
“She has wounds that haven’t been healed just like you do. I think she’s also confused by the way you treated her earlier. You kind of did a 180 on her. She has feelings for you. She doesn’t process things the same way we do. Please be gentle with her when she comes up. I’d like her to be out of the cold and wet until I can take her to see Luke.”
Alluvian is quiet for a little while, for a few moments there is a look of concern then struggle of emotions and then it is gone, “I will be calm, but it is a good thing for her to learn both as a lesson in life and as a realization of what her position is and what she can expect from others in life.”
Key gives her a bland tired look and sighs. At this point no amount of talking will change her mind.
“Thank you, I appreciate it. Im sure Luke will appreciate it it too, I think he see’s himself kind of like her dad. It would piss him of to have to chase a rampaging dragon through the city.”
Alluvian is playing with her blindfold and seems to be talking to herself, maybe arguing. She looks up and just watches Keyleth and then shakes her head.
Anglerond waits patiently for a short while, he looks over Key’s seat at the door and grits his teeth, “I will go get her, I think she is circling outside the door.” He pats Key lovingly as he gets up and heads out of the door to the hallway.
Key smiles up at Anglerond and nods her head. She looks back at Alluvian, the leans forward and touches her arm.
“Are you okay?”
Alluvian shrugs noncommittaly and a cold smile appears. “I still get tired easily, I may need to go to bed and get some rest soon.” She turns and asks the servant to get her nighttime elixir and the servant jumps to it as if she is nervous about messing up an order from Alluvian.
Key narrows her eyes at Alluvian when the servant jumps in what seems like fear. She reaches out and touches him to get his attention.
“I’d like you to come see me after you’re done with your duties for the evening please.” She removes her hand and smiles in reassurance. She turns back to Alluvian.
“Im sorry you’re tired. If you need to go now please don’t feel like you have to stay here and talk to me.”
The servant nods to Keyleth as he leaves. Alluvian watches key, almost smirking. “Am I a cruel mistress Key? I have never beat a servant or punished them more than a sharp word. I love my servants.” She looks up at the door and she sighs heavily at the cajoling that key could hear between Anglerond and night scale convincing her to come in.
“You can tell Night scale I won’t be upset if she comes back tonight. She always obeys requests unerringly.”
Key leans back in her chair, her expression serious. She looks her right in the eye in hopes that what she says will sink in.
“These people serve at their own pleasure, not ours. They are employees not slaves. They deserve to be treated with respect. He jumped as if he were afraid of doing something that would displease you. I would appreciate it if you didn’t verbally abuse my employees. If I hear about you being anything less than polite to anyone that works for me you’ll find yourself without servants.” She smiles cooly and turns her head toward the door.
“Nightscale, your not going to get in trouble with anyone for coming in here. I said it was okay, you’re coming in here for me not Alluvian.”
All amusement and smiles disappear and a cold wrath can be seen in her eyes. She stops momentarily suppressing her first words.
“I have done nothing rude in front of you nor have there been any accusations of such yet you jump to conclusions and make an ultimatum on me. That is fine, please dismiss all your servants from serving me, I will have my own servants gate here in the morning and take care of my own needs.
Key shakes her head. Her tone is matter of fact and overly polite as she speaks.
“Do what you feel you need to do. I noticed you didn’t deny anything that I suggested. Let me be even more clear though. I plan to have the word put out that any servant that feels that they are being treated with anything less than respect can come to me, Nestrim or Anglerond to have their concerns heard.” She stands up suddenly fed up with all that’s gone on.
“Im suddenly very tired. I think I’ll go help Anglerond with Nightscale then retire.” As she walks by she squeezes the girls shoulder in goodbye, more love in the gesture than can be seen on her face.
Alluvian’s jaw is tight from being lectured like a child.. “I would urge you keep in mind I am a queen and not just your sister and I will only be talked to like that for a certain amount of time.”
Key stops on her way to the door and turns around. She is obviously tired of dealing with epic levels of entitlement and she’s making a great effort not to snap at her sister. When she speaks she goes to great effort to make sure that love and concern come through in her tone.
“I love you and you are always welcome in my house. You are family. That being said you are in my house. I informed you of a rule and the consequences of braking it. I would have done the same to anyone else. Im asking you to please follow it. Im not treating you like a child, Im treating you like someone whom has stumbled over a rule they didn’t know was there. This is a touchy subject for me, I feel very strongly about how people are treated.” She takes a deep breath and lets it out. Once done she seems more centered if a bit sad.
“Some advice, take it or leave it as you will. I have some experience in the matter. Be careful whom you throw your rank at. It could backfire. Don’t take that as a threat from me because that is the last thing that was meant by it.”
Alluvian’s face becomes stone, regal, a queen’s countenance. Projecting an older presence, far older than Alluvian’s young age. She stands up as if struck with a fancy she thought of.
“You are Correct, this is your home and I am a guest. I will retire now, and I bid you a good night.”
Her walk towards the door more assertive and graceful then key has ever seen from Alluvia before.
Key watches her go and says nothing. Once she’s out of site she walks through the door and up to the nearest guard. She asks him to keep a discreet eye on Alluvian until a more permanent guard can be placed on her.
“If she tries to leave stop her if you can. Come get Master Nestrim, Lord Anglerond or myself if you can’t.” She smiles warmly and thanks him. Aware that Nightscale and Anglerond are right there in the hall she walks over to them.
“Nightscale, how are you? Have they brought you the warm towels I sent for?”
Anglerond looks over at Key, concern and frustration on his face in his discussion with Night Scale, “See Night Scale, Key is here. Talk with her.” Anglerond steps back, seemingly unable to convince Night Scale to do something.
Night Scale is standing in the foyer, warm towels in her hands, her clothes have been partially undressed as the servants are drying her off. Tears rolling down her eyes as she watches Alluvian walk away. Key can tell that Night Scale is getting ready to follow Alluvian and watch over here.
She turns and looks at Key, her makeup running down her face (Key can’t recall when she saw Night Scale start wearing makeup), “I don’t know what to do.”
Key takes the towels from her and wraps them around her. She gives her a tight hug and talks into her hair as she squeezes.
“She’s not herself right now. There is something wrong with her and she doesn’t realize it. I know it will be hatd but until we figure things out I need you to stay away from her. You can hang out with either me or Luke. I think you will be able to help, I just don’t know how or when yet. Im sorry she’s being so awful to you.”
Night Scale shrugs inconsolable, “I should go with her, she needs me.” She shifts her weight debating how she can follow Alluvian without her noticing.
She looks at Key, “She had these fits in the caverns. She will wake up, not know where she is and cry. She is probably having a vision at the same time, she almost always has a vision while under these spells. She is a good person. Sometimes when she is like this she hurts herself, well its usually after she comes to her senses. She just needs me to be near her when she wakes up.”
Key rubs her arms under the towel. Chafing warmth back into her. “The guards will tell us when she comes out of it. You can go to her then. I don’t want to do anything that would encourage her to bolt. How long do these spells usually last?”
Night Scale looks unsure about staying “It varied wildly, sometimes a few minutes, sometimes a day. It is always rough on her, and I never knew what to do with it.”
Key moves the wet hair out of her face.“This one is already going on a few hours. I suspect it will go on for a while longer. The guard will keep us updated. Im going to try and look into fixing at least some of it. It may help take the pressure off a bit. Are you hungry? Food should be here shortly. Maybe you’ll feel a bit better after you eat something. I know Im starving.” She gives her a reassuring smile and tries to lead her gently back into the sitting room.
Night Scale lets Key lead her back into the room, leaning her head against Key’s shoulder as they move “I am hungry, I have eaten since yesterday, and they only had a small calf available…” She looks up alarmed, “that means Alluvian hasn’t eaten since the night before that. I need to make her eat.”
Key sits her down in a chair and takes the seat next to her. “You can’t always be there to take care of her. We need to teach her to care for herself. You need to take care of yourself if your going to help her at all. Im not sure we have a whole cow about but I’ll do my best.” She reaches out and wipes the tears from her cheeks and poors her a glass of wine.
Night Scale shakes her head, “It’s a bad sign when she does take care of herself, especially after her abduction. Salkya told me to stay with her, because she needs me. Although… now that I am sitting down I do want food so maybe we can wait awhile” She looks up after having her cheeks wiped with a hopeful look on her face… hopeful for food.
Key smiles. Standing up she walks toward the door and opens it, intending to ask questions of someone in the hall. Standing there is the servant she sent for food a while ago. She takes the cart with a thank you, then leans in and whispers an apology and asks her to go to the kitchens and bring back as much cow as she can. She thanks her again and wheels the cart back. She motions toward the laiden cart and sits back down.
“Help yourself, I sent them back for more so don’t worry about us.”
Night Scale begins tapping her foot unconsciously and continues to look between Key and Anglerond. She didn’t seem to know what to say.
Key loads a plate up and sets it in front of her. “Whats the matter? You can talk to me about anything you know. There will be no judgement from either of us. Are you anxious because your not with Alluvian?”
Night Scale sighs, “Everytine I step away from her, she gets hurt. It’s my fault. It’s ok to judge me when I mess up so badly. I should have gotten Nestrim when she started having headaches yesterday but she said she was alright. Now she hates me…”
Key hands her a fork and encourages her to eat. She’ll feel a bit better with food in her belly.
“Nothing that happened to her while you both were in captivity is your fault. You were kept from protecting Alluvian. If you ask Luke he will say the same. From this moment forward you are absolved from any wrong doing in regards to anything that has happened with Alluvian. We’re starting fresh. We’ll all do our best to keep her safe. We’ll all ignore her when she says she’s okay and we know she isn’t. You won’t have to take care of her on your own. We’ll all be here to help. Okay?”
Night Scale is quiet, not fully accepting Key’s words., “I made a promise to her, a promise under the moon to protect her and stay with her no matter what. That no one would hurt her. This was made when we were all camped for her coronation. I can’t renege on that.. while her words were slowly becoming less sad, her appetite seems to be growing.
Key lifts an eyebrow. “I didn’t say you had to brake a promise you made to her. Where in your promise did it say you couldn’t have help? As a matter of fact you’ll be able to keep your promise more easily if you have help. There was also nothing in that promise that said you had to carry the blame for any harm done to her while you physically could not help her. Whennwe found you you had no limbs. They had separated you from your dragon so you -could not- protect her. They did that because they knew you would have kicked their ass had they not.” She loads more food on to her plate.
“Im just asking that you let us help you keep your promise. Can we help you?”
Night Scale nods To Key, “Of course you can. I am so sorry I didn’t pursue her either. I want to be with her. Key can see Night Scale starting to wind up again. It is very unusual to see her this vulnerable and emotional.
Key grabs both of Nightscale’s hands and looks directly into her eyes. “I think she cares about you just as much as you care about her. She’s isn’t herself right now. When Mother gets here tomorrow we’ll all talk about how we can help her. Once she’s a bit more stable things will be better.” She shakes her head.
“Im not sure Im saying this right. Its play that you didn’t persue her before. It will happen.”
Night Scale looks slightly alarmed, “She is always worse after she talks to her mother. I don’t think her mother does anything, I don’t think she causes this, but Alluvian changes even more after long periods of talking to her. Her concern is very clear in her eyes.
Key’s eyebrows draw together in concern.“That’s good to know. I’ll have to meet her at the gate and keep her from talking to Alluvian. At least until she’s a bit more under control. We won’t be able to keep her from her daughter forever though especially because of the reason for her visit.”
Night Scale shakes her head, “Don’t keep her away, the visits do make Alluvian happy, and her mother even happier. I just need to be there… you should take her with Rabbit and see if the judge thing can fix her!!!
Key nods.“That’s a thought. We’ll have to talk with Luke first. Im not exactly clear on how it works.” She picks up a water glass and sips, thinking.
