Key strides into the garden with Anglerond, thier hands linked. She pats Nightscale on the shoulder as she walks by. She lets go of Anglerond’s hand and walks over to Alluvian where she sits amongst the flowers. She sits down next to her and bumps her shoulder against hers.
“How are you? How long have you been out here?”
Night Scale gives Keyleth an affectionate smile as she walks past. She seems quiet, watching, waiting. Key however can hear a rumble from deep in Night Scale’s chest acknowledging her.
Alluvian chuckles as the wind picks up a little. The September weather is starting to turn cooler and the garden is changing its colors as well. Alluvian’s pale skin has the slightest bluish tinge to it of being out in the wind for hours, but she just smiles at Keyleth. “Not long sister, you seem happy. Happier then I have ever seen you. I think there are only a couple things that would make you this happy.”
She just smiles to herself as she leans over and sniffs flowers.
She just smiles, “Do you want me to tell you or would you like to guess?” Her eyes dart over to Anglerond then back to her sister.
Alluvian’s face becomes a giant smile as she leans over and hugs Keylet, “How many babies?? When are they due??? What you naming them???” She wraps her arms even tighter around Keyleth and starts jumping up and down.
Key laughs and holds on, letting her jump herself out. Once she stops she answers her questions.
“To early to tell how many, although Silkya tossed around the word twins so maybe two. You’ll be an auntie in about nine months. We drank a potion to ensure conception and just got back from the temple. I just found all this out and don’t have any clue about baby names. I think I’ll leave the naming up to the father.” She smiles over at Anglerond.
Alluvian lets go of Key for a moment as she leans over and hugs Anglerond who is still in a quiet sort of awe. “Welcome to the family brother.”
Alluvian turns back towards Keyleth, “You going to stay, or head out with Luke and Rabbit? I think you will be fine, but I know Nestrim worries”
Her face screws up into something like incredulity for a moment. “Like he wasn’t before?” Her face relaxes and she swats her sister playfully on the rump.
“I know he worries and this will give him one more things to worry about. But I can’t stay home. I’ll be out there doing what needs to be done until I pop.”
Alluvian chuckles at the slap, “I know you will be fine, I heard stories from Rabbit about drow warriors giving birth that morning and taking heads that evening. You are way tougher.”
Key smiles serenely.“That’s the plan. Although I’ll probably be on a boat on the way home so I won’t have to worry about fighting anything. Now that I’ve said that though Ive probably jinxed myself.”
Alluvian nods, “Just bring us back lots of trophies. Oh, can I babysit?” With that Night Scale looks over quickly, surprised by the question.
Key’s face screws up again.“Trophies? Why would I bring back trophies? Of course you can babysit. You can work that out with Anglerond.” She seems to answer the last question in reflex, her focus still on the first question.
“How are you doing little sister?”
Alluvian shrugs, “I just assumed since Rabbit did, you might, for the big ones. she sometimes brings me some to see. Not the nasty heads ears or teeth… or even penises. She sticks with things like swords of worthy fighters, or helms.”
Alluvia turns to one of the plants and takes a deep breath. “She won’t talk about those kills”
Most of the happiness drains from Key’s face. “That’s not really my thing. I don’t blame Rabbit for not wanting to talk about those kinds of things. I think its a part of herself she’s trying to leave behind. I hope this next trip helps her.”
Alluvian nods, “That makes sense. What about you? Do you know when to expect the babies? Do you have names yet? Sorry if I seem overly absorbed by the baby idea.”
Key sits down on a bench near her.“Should be about 9 months. We set this whole thing in motion this morning. We went to Silkya after we drank the potion and did our thing. She confirmed everything had worked. We don’t have names but if you’d like to help with that you can.” She smiles.
Alluvian pats Key, “I would love to help with that. I think whatever you do, you should give them names that are new to the family, don’t saddle them with history and put them in a position to be compared to someone else. Let them start new. All of us Elenrens are named after family members of course, so we always have to prove we are different then those we are named after.” She seems annoyed by that.
Key shakes her head.“The thought hadn’t even crossed my mind. You’re named for your aunt right?” She pauses, just having realized something.
“You keep saying ‘they’ and ‘them’ have you seen something? Do you know something I don’t?” She smiles, her expression shifting to the inquisitive.
Alluvian chuckles “Ta, no original names here. As for visions, no visions per say, but it is a feeling I have.”
Key smiles and shakes her head.“I suppose having twins would make things simpler. I think I really only want to have a few children. In other ways though, two toddlers means double the trouble. I suppose I should tell Nestrim to start nailing things down.” She looks over to Anglerond, giving him a visual once over to assess how he’s doing.
Night Scale was bent over Anglerond and they seem to be whispering about something. Anglerond looks over and smiles at Key, “I am happy having as many children with you as I can. Just means you need to support us more.” He gives her joking smile.
Alluvian laughs, “It will be awesome to hear Nestrim whine about taking care of your kids and Luke’s kids. Eventually Rabbit’s kids. Anglerond will do it happily, but it will be truly sweet to be here for that to unfold.”
“He’ll whine and moan but at the end of the day they will be just as much his children as they are ours. Im glad they will have aunties and uncles to spoil them.” She looks back over to the two bent heads.
“What are you to hens conspiring over?” She lifts and eyebrow and crosses her arms over her chest. The rest of her expression is lit with humor.
A panicked look crosses Night Scale’s face, she leans down and kisses Anglerond on the cheek, “I was just coming on to Anglerond, I swear that is all we were talking about.”. It can be seen clearly that Night Scale wasn’t coming on to him though.
Alluvian cocks her head, trying to figure out what is going on, she stays quiet. Curiosity on her face
Anglerond looks confusedly at Night Scale, shrugs and turns to Key, “We were just talking about a present that Night Scale was going to get you is all.” He dodges the kick that Night Scale leveled at him for saying it.
He looks at Night Scale, smirks and looks back over at Keyleth, “She wanted it to be a surprise, and it still is since you haven’t gotten it. She learned about birthdays a couple of weeks ago and she is trying to get birthday presents for everyone.”
Key lifts the other eyebrow when Nightscale kisses Anglerond but she doesn’t seem upset by the gesture. She chuckles at their by play, but then her features go soft when she hears what’s really going on.
“That’s a lovely gesture and Im greatfull that your thinking about me. You don’t have to get me anything at all. Having you in my life is enough.” She gives Nightscale a sisterly smile.
A curious and then dismissive look crosses Night Scale’s face. She cocks her head not understanding, “What do you mean presents aren’t important, they are really important. The more you get the better it is.”. She has no idea why someone thinks getting presents from others wouldn’t be important.
Alluvian just smiles and shakes her head while Anglerond looks at Night Scale, shrugs “I guess you can take the Dragon out of the hoard, but not hoard out of the dragon.” He then begins to start laughing as Night Scale looks confusedly at him not understanding what is wrong or funny about that.
Key lifts a shoulder and lets it fall. Her face full of amusement. She thinks for a few moments on how to frame her explanation before she continues.
“So to you your hoad and getting things to put in your hoard is very important. Not everyone thinks having a hoard or getting things to put in their hoard is the most important thing to them. Everyone’s idea of what is most important is different. Some people’s idea of what’s important isn’t even stuff its idea’s. Mine is my family and friends. They are the thing that is most important to me. As long as they are happy, I am happy. They are the one thing I can’t live without. I know a monk that values free will above all things. Does that make sense to you?” She leans forward and puts her elbows on her knees, expression open.
Night Scale shakes her head disapprovingly and talks to Key as if explaining the facts of life. “The family is most important to me, but that is why the hoard is also most important. With a hoard I can buy healing, shelter, food for my family. I can afford to hire someone to rescue them or hire someone to avenge them. In the end without a hoard you can’t take care of those you love.”. She still does t seem to understand the why of Key’s explanation.”
Key leans back a look of surprise there and gone almost before it would go unnoticed. She blinks a few times and smiles while she thinks of how to respond.
“Well said. You make a very good point. You’ve brought me a valuable lesson. By your logic Im not a very good protector of my family am I?” She gives her a wink.
Night Scale smiles At Key a s winks back“That isn’t your role. You aren’t the financier ofthe family, your job is killing things, exploring things and leading things. I can finance, Rabbit and Nestrim as well.”.
She huffs out a breath.“If you say so, but the head of the family is usually the one that kills and avenges for the family. If I don’t have money how do I perform that duty the way it should be performed?”
Night Scale walka over and pats key reassuringly“No, a head of the family doesn’t have to personally come up with money, the leader is responsible to go to someone with the gold, or someone who can arrange it for them. Your job is to arrange for things to happen using the resources the others provide. It’s like saying you are responsible for diplomatic negotiations. That is for someone else, there are too many things for you to oversee personally. So you just order for it to happen, it is the job of the person you ordered to do that job.”.
“Another good point. I should have Nestrim put you to work. You’re quite insightful.” She smiles.
“But back to the original topic. Your friendship is gift enough for me. Use whatever you would have spent on me on Alluvian or the others. Seeing them happy will make me happy.”
Night Scale leans over and wraps Key in her arms. Key can feel the tautness of the dragon as her muscles move under her skin, but at no point does the incredible strength do anything to make Key uncomfortable. “I love you, and you and the rest cannot understand how much all of you mean to me, and what you saved me from.”.
Key is tense with surprise at first but relaxes into her embrace. “I am so glad we found you. You are our family now. I can’t imagine life without you.” She perks up, remembering something.
“Did you ever pick out a room here?”
Night Scale shrugs noncommittally. “Not yet, someone is out here often enough I haven’t had time to do much else.”. she gives Key a smile to indicate she is ok with that.
She lifts an eyebrow and looks to Alluvian. “Well you need to pick out a room before they are all filled up. You should drag my sister in to help you. She can make sure the one you pick can be close to hers.” She speaks in a way that makes it clear that she’s not just talking to Nightscale.
Night Scale smirks as she looks over at Alluvian, “I will get a room this afternoon, I think the other aspect is someone is fond of me sleeping on the corner of her bed and has gotten used to that. I like that well enough but I am tired of sleeping in my clothes, and I would like to just sleep naked every once in awhile.”
Night Scale looks up at Key, “Are you ok if I pick a second spot to get comfortable in my other form? I realize I need to place it a lot further out so I don’t take up valuable space, but I wanted to make sure that is ok. I do realize that Nestrim is making part of the roof of the new floors a place I can land and take off from, and to sunbathe in, but I wanted something inside for when its cold and snowing”
Key notices fact that Night Scale asks, doesn’t assume and doesn’t push immediately is an immense change to when she first came to live with the group almost 4 years ago.
Alluvian says nothing, but there is a small smile that slips onto her face when Night Scale mentions sleeping on the corner of her bed. Night Scale doesn’t notice, but obviously that is something Alluvian is intentionally doing and seems to feel it is going well.
Key smiles.“Thank you so much for asking.” She leans in and puts a hand on her forearm to let her know how much her curtesy is appreciated.
“I would love if you had space to strech out here. Go see Nestrim when you have time, he’ll know best where there is extra space large enough to suit your purposes. If you don’t mind my asking though, why aren’t you sleeping naked -in- thr bed with her? I thought the two of you had that kind of relationship.”
Night Scale looks surprised, and then her face becomes red and she looks down. A sheepish smile, “No, I didn’t want to push anything, she endured a lot in the underground. Before we were captured we played around but never more than making out, maybe some breast play, but nothing more.”
Night Scale leans over and whispers so only Key can hear, “I really want to, but she has nightmares. She never got touched physically but they did things to her mind and I don’t want her to feel pressured. I think I love her. I think my dragon self though has a hard time accepting another female…. I don’t know what to do.” She looks away, unsure what to say.
Alluvian continues to say nothing, she is smelling flowers and motioning Anglerond over as they talk in whispers. Anglerond can be seen rolling his eyes with an amused smile.
Key’s eye go flat as she listens to what is suggested that Alluvian went through. She blinks a few times to regain composure, then smiles at Nightscale.
“I think she needs time. Maybe lots of it. On both counts you should follow your heart. As far as the last part, it will be hard for me to give you advice because I’ll never be in yoir shoes. Have you tried talking to Luke about it? I will say that I know you are confused, but what ever way you go it won’t be wrong. Your the only one that can say whats right and wrong for you when it comes to your sexuality.”
Night Scale smiles and hugs Key yet again, she still hasn’t learned about personal space, “Thank you, it’s hard because part of me really wants to do it, the other part wants her to be close but not that. As for her, I will definitely give her as much space as she needs. It is weird, nothing they did was sexual even mental stuff. I think it was even more horrible.” While Alluvian and Angkerond both continue to whisper.
Key glances over to the two heads whispering together, then back to Nightscale. “What sorts of things did they do to her? You know it wasn’t your fault that it happened right?”
Night Scale’s face becomes serious, her own marks of PTSD becomes evident in her hard eyes. She pushes down her emotions,“It was my fault, that is plain. I should have died trying to stop them. Then once they captured me I should have done something, anything to help her. When they grabbed us she begged me to kill her before they took her, I didn’t. I thought maybe I could break us free like one of those stories you hear the bard tell. She suffered because I failed in protecting her and because I did t do what she asked..”
Night Scale’s face becomes even hrder, “I won’t ever let it happen again.”
Key pulls her into a hug. “What she asked was unreasonable. You did the right thing by not killing her. It may not seem like it to you now, but as time passes you’ll be glad you didn’t kill her. Im glad you didn’t kill her. I’ll talk to Luke about taking you with us when we go after Mori next. Punching him in the face a few hundred times might make you feel better.” She pokes her playfully.
“Do you go with Alluvian when she spends time at the temple?”
Night Scale’s face becomes sad and she shakes her head, she just wraps her arms around Key again not wanting to move, “It doesn’t feel like I did the right thing When she does fall asleep she whimpers and whines and cries when she sleeps. If she is under a roof too long she starts having a break down slowly. It makes me cry every time I hear it.”
Night Scale shrugs, “As for the temple, I go to most of them. Sometimes Salkya will take Alluvian into the central room, but even then I get to come usually.”
Key sits quietly and just stokes Nightscale’s hair. She’s doesn’t want to talk until the anger and sadness can be banished from her voice.
“Have you thought about talking to Silkya yourself? She could maybe help you to. She’s a very wise woman. Perhaps you and Alluvian could talk to her together?” She stops talking again for a few moments, anger creeping back in.
“I promise you I will do all that I can to kill him and scatter his ashes to the winds. He will not get away with what he’s done.
Night Scale’s buries her head into Key, “I haven’t talked to her. Dragons don’t get a lot of options around gods, not since the dragon wars long ago. Greater demons and devils work with dragons, but not gods, we were cast out”
Key rubs her back in small comforting circles. “You don’t have to choose to serve her god in order to talk to her. I talk to her and I don’t serve any god. Talking to her may help to unburden your heart. She may have some good advice.”
Night Scale sob’s lightly into Key “I am not allowed to talk to gods or priestesses, I am a monster.”
Key hugs her tighter. “You are no monster. If your more comfortable with it you can always talk to me. Im sure Luke would also listen if you needed someone as well.”
Night Scale’s sobs stop and she brushes her eyes, trying to not make enough noise for Alluvian to hear“Thank you Key, I think I will talk with you and Luke. Thank you.”
Key smiles warmly. “Your very welcome. Im always here. Now lets break up whatever plan they are hatching over there.” She bobs her head in the direction of the other two and a mischievous grin spreads across her face. She lifts her voice to carry.
“What are you two up to over there?”
Night Scale’s gaze follows over to Alluvian and she smiles at her.
Alluvian head shoots up… “WHAT, we are just talking!?!” The grin on her face says something was up.
Anglerond smiles at Key, nothing but love evident on his face, “Someone is trying to convince me to do something drastic, and I am explaining to her why it is a bad idea.”
Key lifts both eyebrows, the smile still in place? “Drastic? You mean like going to the underdark drastic? Or just getting her friends and family black out waisted drastic? The last one I know wasn’t all Alluvian but she had way more experience in that area than I did.”
Alluvian says nothing, her smile just deepens while Night Scale walks over to her and sniffs her all over, trying to deduce what happened.
Anglerond face tries to be blank, but he can’t keep his emotions back from Key and there is a smile, “It is probably something as bad for you as going to the underdark, and probably more invasive then getting wasted. Either way you don’t have to worry, I would never put you in a compromising position my love.”
Her expression starts to bleed into exasperation. “Why don’t you tell me what you had planned to do and I can be the judge of what’s compromising.” She looks over to Alluvian.
“Spill it. You know I won’t leave either of you alone until you do.”
Alluvian looks exasperated at Anglerond as Anglerond’s face shifts a little sadder for a moment before becoming a smile again., “I wasn’t going to do anything, Alluvian is pushing but she knows I can’t do it, it’s not good for you. Also it isn’t fair to you…. So…. what do you want for dinner!.”
Anglerond seems desperate to change the subject. He smiles at Key lovingly..
Key takes a deep, slow breath in then lets it out. She takes a moment to center herself and channel calm that is evident she is starting to struggle to hold onto.
“Please tell me what’s going on. The more you talk the deeper you dig. I would like to be able to decide for myself whats good and or fair for me and what isn’t.”
Alluvian starts jumping up and down excitedly, clapping her hands like a child on Yule. Her words are in Sylvan as she starts cackling like a teenager, “Do it, Do it, Do it. You will regret the rest of your life if you don’t do it Anglerond. Make the jump!” Her squeals are loud and lighthearted.
Anglerond freezes in front of Key. He wants to do this, desperately needs to do this. He realizes this is selfish though. Not what she wants or needs right now. He seems torn, but eventually the hard shell comes over him. He leans over and kisses Key. He knows what he should do, she is his Empress and she deserves him fully. “It is nothing love of my heart, just know I am yours to command for anything and that I love you above life, or blood.”
He stops there, what he wants to say still left unsaid.
Key’s expression goes soft. You can tell she’s still a bit frustrated, but the overwhelming emotion emanating from her is love. She reaches over and takes his hand in hers and kisses the back of it, then lets their clasped hands settle in her lap.
“I love you too, very, very much. I will give you anything that’s in my power to give you.” She pauses and looks over to Alluvian.
“What is it that he will regret for the rest of his life?”
Alluvian immediately deflates a bit and gets quiet. Obviously unhappy with Anglerond’s response she turns and mouths clearly to Keyleth, “He wants to ask “THE QUESTION””
She looks both excited and dreading what is unfolding in front of her blind eyes.
Anglerond smiles and beams with his happiness, inside he pushes down his sadness, he can’t ask her to ruin her future. It isn’t fair to her. He continues smiling as he responds. “You give me everything I need my love. Just your smile.”
He smiles trying to break awkward mood and gives Keyleth a courtly bow.
Key smiles and looks over at Anglerond. “Is that really what you want? I need it to come from you if thats what you want. If it is we’ll talk to Nestrim and do the pro’s and con’s of the situation. I won’t rule it out as an option if it’s something you want us to consider.” She squeezes the hand in hers and leans in and kisses him.
Alluvian shifts her weight and kicks Anglerond playfully on the ass, “My gods and goddesses man ask her. You already made the ring from your Ranger emblem by hand, just do it.”
Alluvian lifts an eyebrow at her sister and smirks, “Although that is probably the most passive… sure if you want we can get married… response I have heard of.”
Anglerond looks pained, he is trapped between his heart and his brain. She made it clear she didn’t want to be married again, she was just in a horrible marriage and it has been decided politically best she doesn’t have a husband. All versus his desire to spend his life with her, no matter if it is in a shack or a palace. He would be happy with just her, but something in him wanted more.
He would regret it though for the rest of his life, second guess himself if he didn’t ask. With that Anglerond performs a courtly kneel in front of Key. He pulls out of his pocket a plain silver ring, hand beaten by someone not craftsman skilled. A poor peasant’s offering to farm girl. “Would you Keyleth Galanodel Elenren Surana consider marrying me and entering into the Ritual of Amrun Vesta?”
// Ritual of Amrun Vesta translates to the Ritual of the Morning Promise, an older form of engagement. One where the person originally asks to marry the second person and if the second person accepts they become engaged. At any point in time 24 hours after that, the second person can, at will turn and ask the first person to marry them themselves, thus completing the ritual with both members asking and both members answering yes. A place of equality in the relationship and possible marriage.
Sometimes this second part never happens, or takes hundreds of years. Sometimes it happens twenty four hours later. It is a very individual thing. This allows the couple both to have a say on asking, or being asked. The ritual stopped being used before Lolth’s leaving Corellon and is rumored by drow to be one of the signs why Lolth left, that Correllon was no longer treating her and by default women equally anymore.
Key elbows her sister playfully. As Anglerond kneels in front of her and begins to speak, her attention shifts back to him with an intense focus. She’s quiet after he’s finished, and for a heartbeat it seems like she won’t say anything. Then she reaches down and pulls him from his knees. She stands up with him and kisses him again. This time she tries to put all the love she feels for him into it. When she pulls her head back to look at him her eyes are full of joy But they way she holds her body betrays the fact that she’s thinking of the previous time she was married and of Glorian so recently dead. She takes the ring and slides it onto a finger.
“First, that is the last time you’ll ever kneel in front of me. Second, I won’t ever lie to you. I don’t plan to start now. If it were just the two of us living alone in a grass hut I would say yes in a heartbeat, inspite of how things turned out for me in my past. I know you would never hurt me intentionally and I hope you know I would never intentionally hurt you. I have so much to take into consideration. Im so afraid of doing something that will cause all this” she gestures to the house around her.
“to come crashing down around our ears. I may have to give you this ring back. But if I do I want you to know that you are the man that I love, the father of our children. The first think I think of in the morning and the last thing at night. In my heart we’re already married and there we can never be parted.” She looks down at her feet, suddenly unsure of herself again.
Key can see Alluvian rolling her eyes behind her blindfold “Quit being nannies and go to Luke and have him marry you right now. Do it for love. The Empire will be built, if they don’t like it” she motions the world around her, “Then we will crush them like ants and take it. The people will love it. Common people love when things are done for love, not politics.”
Anglerond stands up, he loves this woman so much, she could do nothing to deter that. “That is more than I could have hoped for Key. That is why I presented it in a way you could hold, or turn it down at your convenience. You have obligations and I love you no matter what.”
He does raise his eyebrow at Alluvian’s annoyance. The smile still on his face.
key beams, all heaviness of heart gone. She kisses him again, this time quick, but fierce. She turns to Alluvian, concern in her eyes, her voice gentle.
“Crush them like ants? There will be no crushing. There will also be no rushing head long into anything. I did that the first time and it didn’t end at all well. Where did that sentiment come from? That isn’t like you at all?”
Anglerond quietly watches as Alluvian hesitates, she seems confused by the question at first. “I am not sure what you mean. I guess I have always believed if any noble or ruler wants to give you a hard time because you didn’t marry them, then they can come take it with a sword.” she thinks about it a little more, twitches her head for a moment causing Night Scale to shift watching her.
Alluvian’s smile hardens, becomes older and slightly cruel around the edges, “It is because you are an Empress and I am a queen. If they have a problem with what we do, they can pay for it. Their people will eventually follow you no matter what.”
Key looks just as confused as Alluvian feels. She shrugs one shoulder in an attempt to lighten the mood.
“Queen or Empress I guess I see it as a philosophical issue. I won’t ever force anyone to follow me. Either they will or they won’t. I can expect to agree with everyone on everything. That being said I plan to defend me and mine when necessary. I guess I see fighting as something only to be done when all other avenues have been exhausted.” She smiles and kisses her on the cheek.
Key can smell lilacs and orchids on Alluvian’s skin, a strong smell. There is a hesitation in Alluvian after the kiss, as if she hadn’t expected that and wasn’t sure what to do.
She turns towards Night Scale as if assessing her guard with new metaphorical eyes. She then turns back to Key “Can we go inside to a nice place to sit, maybe have some expensive wine and talk there?
“Of course, where would you like to go?” She stands up and looks around at the assembled party to see if they plan to follow.
Alluvian turns to go and smiles, “There is a nice meeting and relaxing room Nestrim made to meet guests in. There is always a servant nearby and food at the ready. We can celebrate at least the love the two of you share.” She motions Anglerond and Key with her left hand.
She turns towards Night Scale and stops. A brief grimace crosses her face as if she is thinking of something, and then her older smile comes back. She makes a waving away motion with her hands, “Night Scale, go stretch your wings or something tonight, you won’t be needed with me. We should probably get a breather.”
Night Scale looks surprised at the dismissal and then saddened. She nods and turns away, her voice becoming more professional, respectful but curt. “As you say my queen.”
Key looks confused at the dismissal as well. She looks at Alluvian for a ling moment as if she could read answers etched in her skin. When she doesn’t find anything she shakes her head and squeezes Nightscale’s hand before she goes.
“That sounds like a good place to relax. We can talk more when we get there.” She puts emphasis on ‘talk more’, it’s evident that she’ll be grilled about her and Nightscale behind closed doors.
