Key wanders into the temple with a bit less of her usual bravado. She looks around at all the cats, petty a few of the larger ones that will let her near. She looks around a bit for Silkya. When she doesn’t find her right away she sits down on the floor with the cats. Pulling some bits of food from her pouch she settles herself in to be mauled by the purring horde.
The cats surrounding Key grow in size as she feeds them to an almost surrealistic number. Happy purrs and meows echo in the room. A few minutes later Salkya walks through the small room (the entire temple is tiny compared to the other temples in the area) and waves as she passes.
A few moments later Salkya steps back into the room, a look of curiosity on her face as she realized who was in the room. She turns and walks over to where Key is sitting and sits down beside her, the cats seeming to make a space for her without being told. She looks at the elf for a moment,
“Is everything ok Keyleth?”
Key looks at her and smiles.“Everything is fine. I just have a favor to ask.” She shifts some of the cats so she can move to a place were she can look at the other woman as they talk.
“I need a potion that will allow me to concieve right after I use it. I talked with Nestrim and he said he was sure they existed, but I thought I’d talk to you about it directly.” She strokes the cat in her lap absently.
Salkya watches Keyleth and smiles at her brightly. “Of course there is. It is a very very simple potion to create. Do you want one?”
“Yes please. How long does the magic in the potion stay good for? I may not get the chance to use it right away.” Her expression grows a bit distracted and she looks away seeming to focus on the cat on her lap.
Salkya smiles. “I would recommend using it immediately. It can last for awhile, but if its exposed to other things such as magic, or divine influence it can be effected. It can also lose potency over time. I recommend within 24 hours if possible. Do you still want one now?”
Key looks up at her, eyebrows drawing together. “I should probably wait then. Anglerond is… has other things to focus on for the next little while.” She smiles but it doesn’t quite reach her eyes.
“Thank you though. Can I talk to you about something else?”
Salkya nods, “I am always here for you, ask anything you want. Also, can I make an observation about you and Anglerond?”
She makes Silkya her sole focus, the question she was about to ask forgotten for the moment.“Sure.” She says simply, tilting her head a fraction, and waits for her to speak.
Salkya reaches over and affectionately touches Key’s arm, “I realize you have brought your husband’s daughter back and that is a fantastical thing.” She raises her hand to forestall any objection to the term, “He is your husband, whether the two of you make an official commitment. I can see the love there. That doesn’t happen often to most people… some people seem to get stalked by it though.” Her eyes drift off towards the warrens.
She returns her gaze, “It is good to let him get to know his daughter, but don’t put off your desires or your timing. The family will grow together and I suspect he doesn’t need alone time with her, he will need you there with him. It will help pull you all together as a family, and it will help him. I suspect he is not used to being around children since he lost them. Don’t put your child off, if that is what you and he wants, for another.”
She stays quiet for a long time. She sits there and strokes the cat in her lap. She finally looks up.“I understand what your saying and to a large extent I agree. I have a few reservations about her and Im not sure Im justified or just becoming jaded woth all the fighting, political and physical, that we’ve been doing.” She takes a deep breath and lets it out slowly.
“I can’t help but think she may be some sort of sleeper agent. I keep waiting for the whole thing to blow up in our faces.”
Salkya watches Key and pats her arm, “That is completely reasonable. It doesn’t mean you can’t grow to care, but the world is dangerous and your group is participating in world shaking things. There is nothing wrong to keep your senses about you. If you feel that way, you should definitely not distance yourself and make sure you and Anglerond continue on your path, just bring her in where she can be part of the family and you can watch her.”
She nods and resumes petting the cat. “Good advice. I guess I will need that potion after all.” She beems.
“Im also irrationally happy to be an auntie. I know Luke is upset about it and Rabbit… I can’t wait for the manor to be filled with childrens laughter.”
Salkya chuckles, “Children make the world better, no matter the circumstances. Luke will make an excellent father, you will make an excellent mother. Why would Rabbit be upset? I didn’t notice anything. Are Luke and Rabbit not getting along?”
“They are fine. She’s just been begging for a baby for a while now and to have Izzy pop up pregnant, very pregnant. I think it adds insult to injury that they were all together at the same time and Rabbit didn’t concieve. There was some funky fea magic in that clearing.” She laughs softly.
Salkya smile returns, “I am glad to hear they are doing well. I am sad to hear they are evidently disagreeing on children, but those things work out. Wasn’t Anglerond and you together during that? Probably better you do it this way.”
Salkya looks up towards the back of the temple and seems to be ordering something in one of the many desert languages that Key heard when she was traveling.
Turning back to Key, “You will have it in about ten minutes Key. by the way I am glad you feel you can come talk to me. I am here for you.”
Key smiles.“We were. I suspect that the fea were creating alliances in their own messed up way. There is nothing to alli between Anglerond and I. We may not see eye to eye about some things but that doesn’t mean your not wise. I’d have to be stupid to not head your council.”
Salkya makes small talk for some time until, a young acolyte comes out with a glass stoppered bottle. The acolyte bows to Salkya as she hands it directly to Keyleth. Salkya then turns back to Keyleth “Drink this, if you want to double your chance get Anglerond to drink half. Make sure he is fully healthy as well.”
She pats Key on her arm, “No pressure to leave though, you can stay and chat with me as long as you want.”
Key takes the vile and slides it into her pouch. “Thank you.” She dips her head in respect.
“I do have some other questions for you. Just because I don’t worship a god doesn’t mean I want t keep my people from doing so. Quite the opposite, I want them to feel free to worship in any way they choose privided its not distructive. I want to build a space at the manor where people can go to do that. Is there anything I should be sure to include or leave out? I don’t want to offend anyone by accident.”
Salkya smiles, “I think the most important thing is to not overthink it. Maybe just give empty spaces for people to set up for their individual religions. I would set out ground rules, no forbidden religions, no sacrifices of sentient beings… that kind of thing. You are doing great my child, don’t worry about the details too much, that is what your support should be doing.”
Key nods.“I guess I feel compelled to put my finger into everything. It’s all my responsibility, the land and the well being of the people on it.” She shakes her head and sighs she lets the warmth she is feeling cone through in her smile.
“That’s probably why Nestrim will have an aneurism any day now.”
Salkya shakes her head smiling, “That was the hardest thing to teach Luke, you can’t control what happens and the harder you try the worse it will go. Almost nothing is responsible except what you do personally, you have to give others room to move or they will fail or rebel. You are doing great..”
She starts to extricate herself from the sleepy cats on and around her. She stretches out her legs and leans back on her hands.
“Not surprisingly, you are not the first person to say that. I guess the universe is try to deliver a message to me. I suppose I should open myself to it. The universe has been trying to deliver a lot of messages and not just to me.”
Salkya sighs, “How is Luke doing? I worry about him, and I worry about who will be there for him when I am gone someday. I am exhilarated that he is dating people and he has a friend like you. I thought I would ask you though, he will keep things from me. He thinks I don’t notice. “ Salkya chuckles to herself.
Key chuckles. “I will always watch over Luke. He’s family now. Im not sure if he intentionally ignores the fact that so many people care for him or if its just something that he can’t process due to his past. I will enjoy watching him open up though. I hope Rabbit finds a way to extend his life span. She won’t be the onky one heart broken when he goes.”
Salkya raises are eyebrow, “I am hoping his father’s blood eventually activates. Tieflings do live a bit longer than humans, but those who are closer in blood to the infernal live longer. I also hope you can work it out for Jack and Anglerond. Do you have anything worked out for your love?”
Key purses her lips. “I was kind of counting on Rabbits solution to work out. Ive had so much on my plate its been hard to add extra stuff. That sounds pretty awful doesn’t it.”
Salkya wrinkles her raised eyebrows, “Of course not. You are a team and a family. One of the great things about a family is the fact you can rely on each other to do different things without worry or payment. That is a healthy family right there. Nothing to be ashamed about.”
When Silkya says the word ‘payment’ keys face lights as if she was reminded of something she forgot. She stands and walks over to the main alter in the room. She starts pulling things out of her bag and she fills several of the bowls with bits of dried fish and other meats then drops a handful of coibs in another bowl. Her movements are full of respect. She turns away from the alter and heads back toward the priestess as she talks.
“I am lucky to have found the family that I have.” She smiles.
Salkya wrinkles her nose “You know I wasn’t meaning you should pay us. We will of course take it but at no point should you ever feel obligated to pay. You are Luke’s family and that makes you are family.”
Key just smiles. “Don’t think of it as payment but more like a sign of respect and gratitude. That was my intention. You’ve helped my by taking a weight off my shoulders. I can do a little something for you as well.” She holds out a hand to help Silkya to her feet. She pats her bag.
“I’ll let you know how it goes.” She gives her a wink.
Salkya walks over to Key and without saying a word wraps her arms around the elf “You are always welcome here child, you need anything and you just tell me or one of the acolytes. Remember to enjoy yourself as well, don’t make tonight a ‘job’, connect with your husband. Let me know when you are done with it and I can verify if it took or not.”
Key looks suprised at the hug but puts her arms around the other woman. She goes a bit pink and chuckles a little uncomfortably.
“I’ll make the time to come back before we head out again. I think it will be another long expedition.”
Salkya seems pleased with the situation and walks Key to the door with the cats in heavy pursuit, “Come by and have lunch or dinner, I promise I can get by without talking about religion.” She gives the elf a smile.
Key throws her head back and laughs. “I think it would be a lively discussion if you keep the religion in.” She waves at her new friend as she exits the temple.”
