The shack is dark, the sun having just arisen as Rabbit eyes open and she wakes up bleary eyed in the already warm summer morning. There is a momentary concern that crosses her face until her hand touches the thigh of the tiefling beside her and a smile lights up her face. She turns to her left and watches him for several minutes. Concentrating on his breathing, the rise and fall of his chest, the sound coming from his mouth.
After some time she sits up in bed, her hair falling down past her shoulders, the hair is far longer then it had been when they got together. The blanket falls of her shoulders, revealing her incredibly pale skin. She gently nudges Luke intently and then after a few moments she nudges him again, “Love, wake up, come back to me.”
Luke’s eyes creak open. He tries to focus, and asks, “Do I need a sword for this?” as he tries to determine why he’s being woken up in the middle of the night. Could be danger? Or could be an elf that doesn’t sleep, it’s hard to tell.
Rabbit smiles at Luke even more. She has a hard time controlling how much she loves him and she knows it comes out in weird stilted ways. Why he cares about her she still doesn’t understand, but she pushes down that thought, breathes out and whispers in a mixture of common and drow, “No you big Lorug, I was thinking about you and I don’t get much alone time lately. I thought maybe we could talk. Nestrim caught me last night and talked to me about what I had asked you. It made me realize you said yes, but you didn’t say how you feel. I want to know how you feel.”
Rabbit gets a little quieter after saying those words, terrified not about whether or not a child is involved, but that Luke would wake up and realize what Rabbit was and drop her. She just hoped when he did that she could handle it while she was in front of him.
“What are we talking about exactly?” Luke asks. “Is this about you wanting a child? or is there something else that you asked me that I don’t remember?”
Luke’s eyes open a little wider. He is glad she wants to talk, but wishes it was during daylight hours. He’s not sure what the elves do all night, but was starting to wonder about it now that Rabbit and Nestrim were having talks while he slept.
Rabbit cocks her head to the side, leans down and sniffs Luke and seeming to enjoy his scent, she then sits back up, “Is it too early in the morning for you? I think the sun is coming up.”
All of a sudden Rabbit didn’t know how to say the words and hesitates, her smile for him doesn’t waver though, “All of it. I realized we have been together for over 18 months. I wasn’t sure if that is normal for you.” She keeps trying to push herself to the actual stuff she wants to talk about, “Have you listened much to the music box I got you?” She wasn’t sure if he had noticed she sung to him and played some of the music on it, but she hadn’t heard him listening and they had been so busy so he probably hadn’t even looked at it. Of course she had filled it with other people’s voices and playing too. She was sure he would prefer their voices.
Luke watches her, and says, “No. It’s not normal for anyone to put up with me for this long. I am entrenched in my lack of control over myself, and that can be an issue with others.”
He then smiles kindly and says, “Yes. I have listened to the music box. Usually when you are gone and running errands. It is nice in the background of my prayers. However, you didn’t wake me up before dawn to ask that did you?”
Rabbit slides over so she can crawl on top of Luke. Once she is comfortably on his lap she pulls the blanket up and around them, forming a mount of blankets on top of Luke, leaving just her head, and a small slice of her chest peeking out, “Are you happy? What would you like from our relationship? Nestrim pointed out that I might have overwhelmed you with the child request. I had realized after he said that, that you have never talked to me about what you want. I don’t want you to think I am entrapping you, or trying to find a way to keep you with me.”
A look of concern crosses her face at the idea he may think she wants to own him, or trap him.
Luke sizes up the situation, but nods and says, “I have never considered children. I don’t mind the idea, but to be fair, I had never considered anyone would want to stay with a Tiefling with a self gratification problem. I am not quite as scattershot as Te’Teh, but I am older and have slowed down. I enjoy what I have with you.” Luke normally isn’t at a loss for words, but is clearly struggling to get his thoughts out.
Rabbit bites her lip unsure of what to say or how to take Luke’s words. She takes a breath, trying to calm her anxiety to a low roar. He owes her nothing, and he has already been more than kind. She should be happy with that. Another deep breath and her heart slows down so it no longer resembles the heartbeat of her namesake, “Your not nearly as selfish as you say, you are more considering of who you dally with otherwise there would have been more of my kind in your bed. I also don’t see you taking Te’Teh into bed and she clearly would do that, especially with her fighting with Jack.”
Rabbit looks away for a moment, her eyes looking away as she conceals some of her emotions, “We have a great situation, we both care for each other. I shouldn’t have asked for more yet. I think I panicked and was trying to go faster then you were ready for.” She was sure she wasn’t going to have time if they waited, but his happiness is what she wants.
Rabbit looks back into Luke’s eyes, her own eyes damp, “I want everything with you. I want every experience someone on the surface can have with their love. I don’t want to go too fast or to go further than where you are at. I should have talked to you first.” Rabbit shoves her fear that she doesn’t have enough time left for a life with Luke. She could feel it slipping away.
Luke snorts, “I got that sort of thing out of my system when I was younger. I’m not really into women that might be trying to use me, kill me, or have a near familial relationship with me. It keeps the drama down. I’m also not into drunken women I don’t know, because that’s never really as fun as it seems.” He smirks.
“Are you worried about having kids now because of this whole abyssal pack thing? If that’s the case maybe we could give it a little bit and see if we can work it out? Then see how you feel? I am pretty damn sure we are working towards a solution,” Luke asks. “It’s not that I don’t want to have a family with you at some point, but we are kind of in the middle of this whole Veronwe thing, which seems mighty dangerous.”
Rabbit isn’t able to look at Luke fully, a wave of emotions of love and anxiety of running out of time wash through her. She twitches her nose like a rabbit for a moment, “Pregnancy won’t slow a drow down, I am not worried about my physical condition.”
Rabbit’s joking manner fades and she looks at Luke in the eyes, “I feel like time is slipping away, like I am running out of it right when I found what I have been looking for.” She looks away for a moment, trying to put it into words.
Rabbit breathes deeply, “I didn’t see Ira the first time we were on the island so it didn’t seem real. This last time though I got to see her. She looks so much like you. She is beautiful and I can see her father in her. She looks at you and adores you. I want to give you that before it is too late. I am afraid that she won’t exist and you won’t have a daughter, if things go poorly and if my time runs out.”
Rabbit makes an exasperated sigh, “Life is a bitch, I spend 400 endless years of slaughter, looking for a battle to die in, but I have to struggle to get four years of happiness. I think maybe I am just tired.” She chuckles too herself at some unfinished joke. Playfully smacking his chest
Luke gives Rabbit a look, “You are a longer lived creature than I am. I don’t know why you feel like you don’t have time. Even us short lived creatures put things off for a few years and arrange things so they aren’t happening during big battles and quests. Why do you feel like you don’t have time?”
Rabbit runs her left hand through Luke’s hair. Her large whirling blue eyes taking him in, “I feel the influence growing in me. It has been happening for years and is incremental, but is starting to move a little quicker. Sekhmet helps me a lot, she sometimes keeps the demon back, but it is inexorable. I am afraid of Sekhmet too, but I know rationally she isn’t the same.”
Rabbit looks away, shifting on top of Luke, she grips his abdomen with her legs as if she is afraid of being dragged off of him, “If a handmaiden is ‘successful’.” Her voice indicates that isn’t something she considered successful anymore, “She will become enlightened, and she will metamorphose into a true handmaiden, demonically touched… I am pretty sure the correct term is possessed.” .
Luke captures her hand and kisses it, “Sekhmet would never do anything without you fully informed consent. She does not want anyone that is not fully willing to commit to her. It’s a big deal, because free will creates stronger bonds and we are regarded as a mutual relationship, not a master/serf relationship. I can understand your fears though.”
“I have no idea what a demonically touched handmaiden is, but is that something like Shea, who is nothing more than a host body for an avatar of Lolth?” Luke asks. “I think the handmaiden process would be excellent at making for a mind that is so disassociated that it would be easy to suppress in a case like that.”
Rabbit closes her eyes and concentrates on the feel of Luke’s lips on her fingers. Trying to shove that feeling and memory into herself where she can keep it safe, “Yes, very similar. The priestesses undergo a similar ritual. When a sacred priestess is found she is dedicated to Lolth or one of the other Seldarine and acts as the speaker. Although why she hides she is a speaker from the rest of the drow I don’t understand. Normally she would have ran the outpost if not a city, instead of serving as a junior priestess. It is a very similar process I suppose, a handmaiden will embody the essence of one of Lolth’s demonic handmaidens. I was supposed to undergo the final ritual, when I left shortly before it was to occur. I suppose I was to be like Shae, but serving one of her maidens almost 80 years ago.”
Rabbit’s eyes flutter open and she stares into Luke’s eternally black eyes trying to lose herself in them, “You know Sekhmet follows you everywhere right? I see it anytime we are in the city. I want to follow her, but I don’t know how. I don’t have anything to offer but killing things. I am not an orator to proclaim the injustices, I am not a healer to fix the wounds, I am not a counselor to fix someone’s soul. I am not a planner to bring plants to fruition to save your flocks. All I know how to do is kill.”.
Luke laughs, and says, “You are overthinking Sekhmet. All you need to do is pray and tell her. If you want to be official, do it in the temple with Salkya. If not, Sekhmet is fond of strays as well. I think the kind of violence you engage in is not the same as when you were a handmaiden. You think about what you are doing. Like me you weigh the weight of your actions against your ethical stance. The only difference is you have a history and know what it’s like to not engage mindfully in what you are doing.”
“You are under no obligation to follow Sekhmet, but if you want to, I can show you the way. It’s far less complicated than what you are used to. Offerings often involve leaving food out for cats by a lot of followers,” He says.
She stares at him for a few moments, squeezing him with her thighs and then looks down at his chest, “I want to follow her, can you show me? Will she hate me when I frenzy?”. She seems like that those last words bother her the most.
She seems to have made a decision. She knows no matter what she is probably screwed but she wants any chance to stay here for as long as she can. “You won’t hate me will you eventually? I am scared of that too. If I become something else I don’t want you to regret this. However, I am going to look for a way to cancel this pact, do whatever I need to do. If it is a pledge to Sekhmet I can give her that. I just don’t want to be taken from here or from you. At least not while I breath.”
“She’s feline in nature. Having claws and frenzying it’s really an issue for her. We just aren’t that dogmatic. She encourages free exploration of what your devotion means to you. If you want, I can take you to the temple, and Salkya can officially bless you. People who come from dogmatic background sometimes like the formal process until they get on their feet. You’ll even get a little booklet for prayers, if you want?” Luke offers.
“I don’t know why you think I will hate you. Part of life is to try different things to see how they feel. We’ll get you out of that pact. That’s not an issue. If that’s the only reason you are wanting to go to Sekhmet, then don’t. We can work around it. She would only want you if you really wanted her,” Luke says as gently as he can.
She just starts rubbing his chest with her hands as if she doesn’t know what to do with them, “I see how you are with her and I want that. I hear her singing and I want to sing back to her. You sometimes smell like the desert, even if we were underground and I like that smell.”.
She smiles. “I promise that I wouldn’t just join up with Sekhmet to avoid another. That seems ludicrous to me. I like what she wants with the world, I like the people she picks and I am a drow, we were created to worship, and I would rather it be someone I could love then someone I would hate.”
“Okay, then treat Sekhmet like anyone you would meet. You will spend some time with her, get to know her, and decided if she’s someone that you want more with. That’s all. The stakes are very low. We have followers come in, and decide it’s not for them all the time. She is very focused on free will, so only those that truly want to stay, do. At any point, you are fully welcome to stop or leave,” Luke says.
“if you want to be official, we can go to the temple tomorrow, and you can feed the cats an offering. They like fish and chicken. Don’t overdo it though, they are piggy and fat,” Luke laughs.
She watches Luke talk, listens to his words but there is something in her demeanor that isn’t sure if she believes it. She then splits into a large grin at the mention of the cats, “I like the fat cats, I just want to feed them more and more. It is more to hold. I want to go to Salkya then and feed the cats.”.
She just watches him for a few more moments, her eyes seem unquestioning in her love for Luke, she does believe Luke believes what he says Sekhmet, and maybe he is right. She looks down at his abdomen and starts rubbing it like a cat’s belly. “I wouldn’t mind at all if you got a little fatter. There would be more of you to love.” She leans down and kisses his belly.
Luke pulls her down to him, and hugs her. “This is your secret plan, yes? To fatten me up? Now I know how Drow are.” He then laughs into her hair.
She sighs heavily, taking in Luke’s smell and feel. Her heart is beating what feels like a million times a minute as she just chuckles into him, “We like to fatten those we love up. It makes for good aged pork for the funerary feast.”. She giggles into him after that “I like the idea of holding you, if there is more that only makes me more happier.”
“Well, you are going to have a rough road with fattening me up. You might need to order in an extra funerary body,” Luke says. He’s a bit on the boney side, despite his small beer belly.
He wraps his long arms around her, and holds her, “My little ball of stabby,”
She sighs happily as he wraps his arms around her. He can almost feel a purr coming out of her as she lays there just enjoying being held. Suddenly in mock indignation, “What do you mean little ball of stabby? I am peaceful…”. She breaks off the rest of her mock tirade chuckling into his chest and just griping him tighter, as if she is worried he will be blown away.
“Peace is not a word I’d use to describe you. Ever. If you want that, you will have to work on it,” Luke says with a laugh.
She looks up at him, her eyes softly glowing blue in the dark, “If that was important to you I would try. I am not good at anything else though. I can play some instruments I guess, or sing. I am not sure what I should do if I ever got to do something else. I did fancy being a bard for awhile when I came out of the underdark, I travelled with that traveling troupe for a few years” She pats the bed beside her “I know I could be a fairly decent bedwarmer if you wanted.”
“That was not my point. I am not asking you to be anything other than what you are,” Luke says, and flicks her head with his index finger, while he’s holding her.
“Since we are going to the Underdark, would you consider gathering blessings before you go down? I worry you are especially at risk with this abyssal pact right now,” Luke asks.
Her eyes get a bit more serious in the dark, “Of course I will. Anything that puts you at ease. I don’t want to put you or the group in danger. Would you consider something? I realize you are going to resist this suggestion, but it is of my own free will that I am asking.”
She looks down at Luke’s belly and stops breathing for a moment, “Would you let me put the collar back on, and re-tattoo myself again with Sobhan’s tattoo magic? Just for our trip down there? I could harness what is in me if I had those safeguards, and we might need it. Things are falling apart down there. I could feel it. It would also still give you options with me if I did get possessed.”
Luke looks concerned at the request, “I’ve been talking to my father, and he’s mentioned that the abyssal forces are losing their minds right now, and the Underdark is extra dangerous because of it. he thought anyone that was touched by abyssal energy, like you, would be extra susceptible. That’s why I asked about an elven god I’m not even partial to.”
Luke’s usual laughing eyes are serious for once.
She never imagined in her life caring what someone was thinking, especially a man. However she knew looking at his eyes she would care about every little thing he ever thought. Her face softens at his concern, she doesn’t like that at all, “I definitely want Sekhmet’s blessing. I will take whatever I can to help bolster when we go down there. Nesterim asked me if I could stay up here, but I don’t think you and the team could get into the proper underdark let alone back out while we are being chased. I have to go with you, and we have to go to stop whatever they are going to do with Veronwe.”
She just wanted to spend the rest of her life, no matter how long it was in bed with this man, she breaths deeply, remembering finally that she required breath “Something very very bad is happening down there, I don’t know if my people will live through it, or that they will be my people anymore once its over. The Matrons are strong, they will hold it back, and probably try to use it for their own purposes, but I think it will overwhelm them and spill up here at some point. I will make sure all the precautions I can take, are taken. I promise if something happens you will see it coming.”
Luke smiles at Rabbit, but knows she can’t promise something like that. She might mean it, but if something overwhelms her she won’t have a choice.
“Well, I guess we will just go talk to Salkya in the morning, and see what she has for us,” he says.
She smiles at Luke, tightens her legs around him and nods “I know she can give blessings, is there something else she can do?”
She does give Luke a stern look then, realizing he hasn’t addressed her large question, “I want you to verbally confirm you will help me with the collar and tattoos. Don’t think I didn’t notice you said nothing about that.” She watches him like a hawk.
Luke smiles, and says, “I did not say it verbally because I did not like it. I’d rather go to the temple first, and see if Salkya has any ideas first, then pursue that only as a last option. I don’t like your free will impinged upon, and I am uncomfortable with the idea that my wishes and desires would be followed to the exclusion of your own.”
She stares at him for a minute… wouldn’t he just understand… She leans down and kisses him when she comes up for air, “When will you get it through that thick horned skull of yours that your wishes and desires are what I want to follow. I can dress up as a poor lady who is trapped and needs your help… and would do anything to repay your kindness, or I could be your plaything you tie up and keep restrained… I can be a convincing bed partner if you have any roles you want fulfilled. I also promise though to do anything I can to minimize your control if that makes you feel better.”
Luke grips her shoulders to keep her from coming back for another kiss, and says, “Okay. Let me be clear. I don’t want it, if you are not happy. Living for my needs is not a functional way to do things. It’s a partnership between us, where I enjoy making sure your needs are met as well. I am not so transient a ghost in your life that you should need to feel you have to chase me.”
He lets go, and looks her in the eyes to make sure she understands.
She stops when he takes a hold of her shoulder and looks at him, surprised. Her mouth open and closes a few times like a fish out of water. Four hundred years of servitude and she didn’t know how to respond to the one she loved without disappointing him, she didn’t know how to explain. She just watches him for a few moments, shoving her insecurity deep within her. When he lets go she starts talking, “Ok… I understand what you are saying. I promise to tell you when I don’t want something, or if it bothers me even a little.” She hesitates, not sure how to say the second part, “It is hard to tell you when I want something. I worry you will think it is just too much.”
Luke keeps looking her in the eyes, and says, “I like you a lot. I think you are worth listening to if you wanna something, or dislike something. Okay? It’s important to me, and it lets me show you I care.”
He smiles, “I am sure there are things that are not that pleasant about me, or things that you would like to do that you haven’t said. I love you, and I can’t work that out with you if you don’t tell me.”
She seems confused for a moment, her happiness at his love for her seems to be making it very hard for her to control the emotions within and moments later tears start flowing down her face. She is happy to be here, happy in this moment but for the life of her she can’t figure out why she is crying. She mewls a little trying to get her words out, finally Luke can hear them,
“Do you think you could let me sleep on the outside? I worry about something happening to you because you are between me and the door. I sometimes lie awake worrying about it.”
For the life of her she couldn’t get the tears to stop, and now she is starting to laugh while she cries. Absentmindedly she wonders if this is why Drow are forbidden to love, they aren’t built for it.
“I don’t know why I am crying, I am not sad.”
“You can sleep on whatever side you want,” Luke says, and then pulls her down to hold her.
“Maybe you are crying because the is all a bit overwhelming? It’s okay. I do love you. I love you even when you cry,” Luke says, and just holds her.
He looks around the room, to see if one of the strays he feeds is floating around. He wiggled his fingers close to the floor until a set feline whiskers sniffs at his hands. He reaches his long arm out and gently lifts the chubby cat up, and puts it on Rabbits back.
Luke laid on the bed on his back, holding Rabbit to his stomach, while petting the exceedingly fat cat that was purring and kneading on her back.
The cat’s large bulk almost engulfs Rabbit’s back in soft, if a bit mangy, fur. The cat’s purr is similar to a rumbling far off avalanche, showing she obviously enjoys being there. The cat watches Luke with its large eyes half lidded, paws kneading, tail softly swaying side to side.
Luke can feel Rabbit’s tension almost immediately subside as she lays on her love, and is in turn laid on by a large, fat if a bit mangy cat. Wrapping her arms around Luke even tighter, Rabbit looks up at Luke’s face, looking at every detail of his visage and taking it in.
“I love you.”
She didn’t dare say anything else, she didn’t understand why he loved her, and she knew she will at some point in time say or do something too much and he would realize who she was. So she kept the rest of her words to herself and just smiled lovingly at him. Besides, how do you explain to someone how you feel like this.
Luke smiles, and simply says, “I love you, too.”
