Key shifts the parchment in her arms to free up and arm. She look to make sure Te’Teh is still with her. She waits a beat then raises her hand and knocks.
Luke opens the door to look at the people standing on his doorstep. The path is well worn, and he’s used to folks coming at all hours.
“Rabbit heard you. She can hear anything, it appears,” Luke says. “I’m making breakfast if you want some?”
Key beams at the two. “No thank you. I ate already. Im sure Te’Teh could eat though.” She motions to the tiefling next to her. She lifts the rolls of parchment in her arm.
“I have some plans for the new house and have a few questions for the two of you. We were also going to take a field trip to the site later if your interested.”
Te’Teh quickly squishes past the tall Tiefling, snickering to herself she immediately heads over to the cook pot. She stops there sniffing the remains and shifts her attention to the bed, and the female sitting on it. A huge smile overtakes her face and she turns to Luke still in the doorway, and ignoring saying anything about Rabbit. “Oh my gods, I am so hungry. I claim dibs on what is in here, until you can make us breakfast.”
Rabbit sits there on the bed, the blanket still draped haphazardly. A soft satisfied smile on her face. Her eyes haven’t left Luke since he got up. After a short time she looks over between Keyleth and Te’Teh. “What have you two been up to?.”
“Alright, have the last of the stew in the pot. It’s still probably warm but it’s been half over the fire since yesterday. I’ll put together some breakfast. I only have wine or ale to drink, though,” Luke explains.
Luke the turns to Key, “Maybe. I hadn’t solidified my plans today yet.” He nods to Rabbit.
Te’Teh starts scraping the soup and eating “Mmm this is good… hmm… it’s pretty cooked. I wonder what caused you to forget about the soup..”
She winks at Luke.
Rabbit sighs loudly, although there is a large smile on her face indicating she is just being a brat.
She drops the blanket, and saunters over to a scattered pile of clothes, starting to put them on she looks at Key, happiness in her eyes,”I secured a lot of underground, I have a Duergar work crew down there. The lazy bastards probably haven’t finished yet though.”
Key’s eyes go a bit round, realizing what she has ruined. “Im sorry, we can go and leave the two of you alone if you want. I really didn’t think this through.” She looks to Rabbit her look even more sheepish now.
“That’s amazing, should we go?”
“Have breakfast. I’m already cracking eggs. I can’t put them back,” Luke says.
Te’Teh looks up from her spoon and pan, the sounds of her eating stop for a minute. “No… we can’t go. There are eggs.”
A small whine accompanies her words, although she still has a smile, while still eating the remains of the soup.
Rabbit rolls her eyes at Key playfully. “Don’t worry, I don’t think this is the last time I get to be with Luke, I have lots of time.”
She looks down at herself, half dressed and sniffs, she then continues to pull her shirt up over her chest and wriggle into her pants. ”I hope you don’t mind that I smell like Luke, because I like it myself. I think I am going to figure out how to make it into one of those fancy perfumes. At the very least I will take advantage of it while he lets me.” She gives Luke a wink, as she leans over and feels for his tail in his pumpkin pants.
Key’s head swivels to look at Te’Teh. A look of astonishment on her features. “Where do you put it all? Your a walking appetite.” She looks at Luke.
“Is that normal? Does she have an extra stomach?” A smile breaks out on her face. She looks to Rabbit.
“I don’t mind at all. I like the way Luke smells. Remind me to tell you about my idea for the warrens.”
“Te’Teh’s appetite isn’t Tiefling related as far as I know. That’s just her. Also, remember, there probably isn’t a single overarching fix for the Warrens, but we can reduce the suffering that abounds here,” Luke says, ignore the discussion on how he smells.
Te’Teh sets the now empty pot down with a clang. She sits at the table and watches Luke begin to cook. She looks around his living area and into his bedroom. She smiles a bit to herself. “Do we need to knock out a wall for more space, or are you two going to be comfortable doubled up?.”
She looks back between Luke and Rabbit, “I guess it would be the same as having a child live with you, it could work.” She gives Luke a smile, she seems very happy that he might have found something.
Rabbit glares at Te’Teh before she smiles. Rabbit then pulls herself closer to her tiefling, and wrapping both of her arms around the big tree known as Luke and hugs him tightly, belying her hieght by only being able to kiss his lower back. Burying her face into his back she says, “I suspect Te’Teh is full blooded not half and she is feeding half of hell with what she eats and what she fucks…” She smiles over at her hungry friend then looks back up at Luke, having moved herself around his side so she can face him.
“How much can you use right now?”
Key takes a seat and watches the interactions around her. “I know it’s not a matter of a permanent fix, but I think it will be a big help. We need to see about acquiring enough space for a building or two. We put a clinic, a soup kitchen and enough space for a shelter for those who need it. Oh!! And the school.” She pauses to make sure that she still has an audience. Taking a breath she continues.
“We hire as many workers as we can from here in the warrens to build what we need, then keep it running once its done. Im more than happy to donate as much as I can to the effort. I’d like to talk to some of the nobles in and around the city to donate if possible too.”
“I like that idea. There are people here with skills. I am the de facto clinic already, but Salkya sends clerics around in may absences. My idea was that a school would help get the next generation educated and better able to escape the squalor of the Warrens. Maybe we could make that a priority?” Luke asks.
He then fishes down a few plates. His kitchen was stocked as if he fed others regularly. He dishes up plates for everyone, and hands them out, “I’m only a passable cook. Nothing better, but it is breakfast?”
Te’teh quickly begins to feast on the food given to her. She looks over at Key and Luke talking, she nods her head.
“I can take extra work, build up a small savings. Or I can look into finding work. There is some work out there that would use our abilities. I know there is already a gang war between the elves and some of the dock gangs and there has been a lot of work if you don’t mind violence.”
She looks over at Key, unsure how she felt about that possibility.
Rabbit just watches Luke for a few moments, something flickers behind her eyes and she detaches from him affectionately. She then walks over and takes a plate of food. She sits at the table and quietly eats. She just watches her friends, obviously thinking about options.
Key takes a plate and takes a few small bites as Luke speaks.
“The school can definitely be priority one. Im going to take my ques from you. You know better than I do what the people here need. I just had an idea I was excited to share.” She looks over at Te’Teh.
“As far as violent work it would depend on what exactly we are doing. But I think we can take it case by case.” She smiles brightly. The thought of helping the people here lighting her from within.
“What do you think Rabbit?”
Rabbit eats a spoonful of egg. She looks over at Key and then to Luke. She shrugs at Key still thinking for a few moments, She pushes her hair out of her eyes “There are several things we can do. It depends on what we are willing to do, what risks we want to take and how fast.” She turns to Luke, “What is more important Luke, a location for these places, or money?”
“Location. We need these things to be available to the people here. They can’t get out, or get far sometimes. It doesn’t take much money to get a teacher, does it?” Luke asks. It’s not like he’s ever done this before.
Key takes another bite of food thinking while she chews.
“Where would we go to find a teacher? Maybe Sobhan could point us in the right direction?” Do you have a place for him to teach while we build a school?”
Rabbit sits back from her food. She looks back up at Luke and brushes her hand up his chest. Stretching as far as her short 4’10 body can reach.
Vexed by being too short to touch his face like she wanted she leans over and plucks parchment and pen from Key and pulls out one of her own map cases. Withdrawing a map of the upper level of the central warrens she lays it out. “Ok Luke, how many buildings and which ones would work the best. I suggest we stick to the surface level for the stuff.”
Te’teh finishes up her plate, and narrowly avoids being stabbed by Rabbit with Rabbit’s fork when Te’teh attempts to sneak food off Rabbit’s plate.
With that she just sits back and watches the chattering continue.
“Let’s see if we can talk to some local people before setting our hearts on a place. I don’t want anyone displaced, and what is available shifts with time. We need to do some talking with the folks that live here and involve them in the process,” Luke suggests.
Rabbit sighs, “Of course we won’t displace anyone. The land in the Warrens is owned by three different families, I am just trying to determine what area we like and arrangements can be made. No rush is required of course” She looks between Luke and Key.
Rabbit is silent for a moment then interrupts one more time, “What if instead of worrying about specific buildings right now, we look at purchasing up portions of the warrens at a time. Then Luke can take his time adjusting the warrens as openings happen. Like I said it is owned by three families and I think we can slowly pick portions up, or do a quick buy before any family realizes it.” Realizing she had interrupted more people she closes her mouth.
Key pushes the remainder of her plate at Te’Teh. She adjusts Rabbits map so that she can see it better.
“I think involving the residents in the process is a fantastic idea. Gove them something to be proud of, something to accomplish. Im not sure if we should buy anything out from under any one. The last thing we need is more enemies. But if we bought in two different places that tend to have vacancies more often, then we could move the families out of one area to the other while we were working on it. I think if we go to them with an offer of a job, they may be less inclined to be angry over us asking them to move. What do you think Luke?”
Luke smiles at everyone, “The families that own the Warrens are not pleasant. If we could buy bits and pieces without them knowing, maybe if you all would act like separate buyers under different names?”
He smirks, “I’m not worried about enemies but then maybe we could sell it to the people who live in it for cost, letting them pay is back over time. Low or no interest?”
“I like both of those ideas. Im also okay with selling it to them interest free. We could also go for a longer time frame so that payments are smaller. Maybe we could find a single real-estate broker that could act on our behalf as multiple buyers? Im not sure who Sobhan used to buy our property, maybe he would do?”
“That’s an idea. It would definitely work best if we had different faces, so that they didn’t know it was us doing it,” Luke agrees.
Key tilts her head thinking. “Maybe we could hire a few people from the warrens?”
Rabbit watches the conversation for a few minutes, then she squishes up and over the table, writing something down. She looks up at Luke. “I would suggest we go to Sobhan. He handles this stuff personally all the time, both in his personal deals and with the House of the Red Silken Glove. He has experts familiar with real estate and info on all the owners. He would still charge a small fee, but it would be nominal, he would do this for what he considers for free. You just need to tell him what you want.”
“Let’s talk to him, because he might know more about the situation here than I do. I just know these people are not good people,” Luke says. “He might have resources.”
Key takes her quill back from Rabbit with a playful snatch. “Sounds good to me. Maybe we should focus on grabbing space near where our tunnels will enter the Warrens so that if there is trouble we can be there quickly?” She looks up at Rabbit. “Where exactly is that?”
Rabbit bats playfully back at Key, she then stops and smiles “I have tunnel access from where our new house goes, that will get us under the warrens. We can’t buy access directly until we buy something and i might recommend having Sobhan buy here.. here… and here….”
She notices the blank look on her friends faces, pulling a fresh sheet of paper she steals the pen back and sketches out what appear to be several lines. She points to the top line. “This top line represents the surface” She then scrawls a second line, “This represents the sewer that connects directly to all sections of the city. All waste, overflow, etc are passed under here. There our thousands of tunnels down here, if you know what you are doing you can stay untouched. However, not a good place to leave with the bugs, rats, and sickness from the waste.”
She then draws a third line below the second. “This is the under city. It only covers portions of the city and is connected by tunnels. There are a lot of areas down here unexplored that you can build to, and live in. It is dangerous but not the worst place of the city.”
She then takes and draws a fourth, fifth and sixth line, “The represent three more levels. This is how far I purchased under your house, for access, or to expand. You will travel these floors most often. They aren’t full of waste generally, the ruins of the old city was built on itself multiple times. Each location doesn’t necessarily have three of these levels, they vary. These are also not generally considered adventuring levels. You can buy more if needed.”
She then draws a large zig zag squiggle. “This represents the literally dozens and maybe hundreds of levels even further below. These are the guild levels and you have to earn your way down to buy sections, or discover it. I have purchased all the space below your land down to the sixth level. I have then purchased multiple lines across the city, small corridors so we can get out if needed. I have three spots in the warrens. We can then go up to the sewer level and from there enter the warren through one of dozens of entrances.”
She sits back, winded by her quick but not so quick explanation.
Luke looks over Rabbits explanations, and kind of stutters, “Um. . uh. . . as a surface dweller this is all new to me. I knew there were tunnels under us, but I had no real idea.”
He traces the stuff rabbit indicated she bought, “How long have you been buying under land tunnels?
Key turns to face Rabbit. “That’s a really good question. Also couldn’t be a cheep endeavor to undertake.”
Rabbit’s looks at the two of them, raises an eyebrow at the slurping of Te’Teh and returns her gaze. “I owned a lot of the tunnels to begin with, I use it extensively for a lot of work for the last 30 plus years.”
While she is talking her face becomes more flat as she thinks about it. “I needed unfettered access between the different areas, I found it was easier to secure passage. I have enough that I can afford to let one or even a few uncovered and still continue to operate.” She doesn’t seem to be able to look at Luke in the eyes, “I have learned many ways to get up into the sewer level, and from there get into pretty much any building in the city. In addition to what I did for my mother, Sobhan had me train a lot and I am good at it. Besides that is how I am a good ‘guide’ when I was brought in to the team.”
She picks up a large cup of wine and downs it, a smile returning, mostly.
Luke gauges Rabbits shift in mood, and says, “Well, regardless of your past and how you acquired them, it sounds like it might be put to a good cause now. As long as I don’t have to get wet, I’m find with tunnels.”
He tentatively reaches out to rest his hand over hers at the table.
Key smiles at Rabbit reassuringly. “That’s pretty amazing! So we could go all over the city and pop up wherever we wanted?” Her face goes dreamy.
“We’ll never have to be stuck in the press of bodies on a crowded city street again.”
As Luke’s hands grasp hers, she grips back and her face visibly softens, tension springs unwinding. “We have many tunnels under there. Be careful though, things still find their way into the lower levels so don’t go unarmed. However it is a good way to move a queen, or a group of hunted people through the city. I will get you two the maps I have. I know where things are in my head, but if something happens to me I don’t want to leave you all hanging.”
She pulls Luke’s hand up to her small mouth and kisses it several times lightly, the happiness from the prior evening returning to her eyes.
Luke just smiles down at the short elf. He doesn’t really care about he conversation, but says, “Yeah. Copies would be helpful for this of us that don’t know the tunnels. Is there a way to block the tunnels so they are just a point A to point B thing, or too much work?”
“Not that anything’s going to happen to you any time soon.” She gives Rabbit a look.
“But yes, copies would be a good idea. Blocking the tunnels is another good idea if it’s doable.” She picks up her wuill and jots a note down on a rapidly growing list of to-do’s
“If we can’t block them, how costly would it be to set spells on them to deter people and things from spending time in there?”
Rabbit continues holding Luke’s hand. “We can seal off most of the tunnels, and it wouldn’t be too costly for traps and spell foci. Te’Teh would be definitely useful for this, with her natural abilities..”
She smiles over at the tiefling
Key nods as Rabbit speaks then starts to write again and speaks to Te’Teh.
“Are you okay setting that up? Should we organize some help for you?” She stops writing abruptly sitting up in her chair, her back ridged. Her cheeks go a bit pink, her eyes round.
“We lit out of the inn without letting Anglerond know where we were going.”
Rabbit smirks. “He has been outside for the last three or four minutes, elven rangers always think they are quiet, but the knock around like a large ox”
Rabbit gives Key a wink, “Although you could do a lot worse.”
“Well, I can set another plate, if he wants. My patients and people won’t come around unless it’s an emergency with you all here anyways. They have an allergy to the well armed,” Luke smiles.
“Can we talk about the big issue? Sorting out all of this is fine, but Glorion was here, and was looking for the dragon. She hid from him while he was looking. I don’t think she’s necessarily evil in character, but as boastful and willing to fight as she is, she hid from him, and that is concerning to me that her instincts ran that way,” Luke says.
