Rabbit beams at her friends. “I am a cheap roommate and love saving money. Also, I take up very little floorspace and don’t ask to pay based on my size.”
She does look at Luke, gives him another soft smile. “I would feel horrible if I made you chaste. That isn’t fair or fun to you, especially all you are doing for me.” Her smile erupts again laughing that has an almost chirp sound at the end of each laugh. “HAHA if it isn’t me, then just give me a warning with a glove on the doorknob or something like that.”
Key barks out a laugh. “When you find a glove on the door handle, feel free to come sleep with me.”
“I can neither confirm nor deny I might need a signal, but I live in the Warrens. I don’t bring people home there either,” Luke laughs.
Rabbit just quietly watches Luke, almost holding her breath.. “Am I allowed to stay with you in Kokand if things are rough? I don’t want to make any assumptions.”
Key chuckles. “Well soon we will have a nice, safe, secure, gated, safe place to live. With your own room even. Then you can figure out a system all yoir own.”
Reggie’s tiny voice pipes up. “Well I can’t speak for the rest of the group and whatever dynamics are going on here since I’m too new to everything,” he kind of makes a circle gesture towards the table, “But I can assure you that if you ever need a safe space to just decompress I’m sure the Library would give a lot to have a resident expert on all things Underdark. I could put in a word if that’s an option you’d like to have in the future. It’s not glamorous work by any means, mostly fact-checking and copying texts, but it is quiet.”
Luke smiles are Reggie and Key, but nods yes to Rabbit, “In Kokand, too, if you need it. I don’t have a lot of room, but you are small.” He smirks.
Te’teh bursts out laughing loudly, holding her head. “You will have a ‘fun size’ elf in your bed, you could even fit two and not miss any space.”
Te’teh continues to chuckle as she looks at her mentor and grand leader.
Rabbit jokingly kicks at Key under the table when she talks about Rabbit getting her own room. “Don’t mess with my jam sister.” She winks at Key and then turns to Reggie, her voice gets quiet and more inquisitive.
“I very much appreciate the idea Reggie. Something about the library creeps me out, I would have to get to know more about it. If my mother won’t raid library archives for possible treasure, that means I would be wary of interacting too closely with the library.”
Finally she turns to Luke, a small smile at the corner of her mouth at Te’Teh’s outburst. “Thank you Luke, I truly do appreciate this, oh and if we are too tight of quarters I am flexible and can fit into smaller spots. I don’t think a tree will notice me if he doesn’t want to.”
Key dodges the smaller elfs kick laughing “What?! I was actually talking to Luke. We can make sire Luke gets a big room if you think that will help.”
Luke waves off the suggestion, “I live a fairly ascetic life style, and have had other people life with me when they needed it. It’s fine.”
Rabbit looks between Luke, Jack and Key smiling.
“I already have Sobhan working on clearing out some of the unused corridors in the under city. The undercity is cheap since it is abandoned and unexplored and isn’t in the dungeon areas so it doesn’t have much treasure value. It will provide Luke and anyone else who needs a straight shot between your new house and the warrens an anonymous way in and out. He also is preparing an area that the poor can come live in a lot more hospitable housing with access to food.”
Her gaze falls back on Luke, watching him.
Key smiles at Luke mischievously and nods at Rabbit. “You guys work fast. Will everything be ready for us when we get home?”
Rabbit shrugs with a small smile. “I will probably have to crack some skulls, I bet they are pissing off. However, it will be close enough it won’t matter for us.”
“That sounds fantastic,” Luke says with a smile.
“That’s fantastic! It will be nice to have a space that is all ours.”
She pauses considering. “Im going to need to start taking extra jobs between all our stuff to pay it off. I can’t wait to see it.”
She miles broadly at Rabbit.
Rabbit just looks at Key blankly for a few moments, then gives her another smile.
“I see someone has no experience around queens. Queens don’t pay for anything.”
Rabbit shrugs her shoulders “I have worked for Sobhan for 40 years and not spent more than what I needed to. He is a very generous master. The costs are covered in full, with what your mom has already sent and what I contributed you should be set up.”
Rabbit looks over at Luke, “I think I might have found a charity to contribute to with the rest of my money. I do this for a life because I am good at it, it sings to me, and I couldn’t do much else. I can’t sit and do nothing. The money is generally irrelevant to me.”
Luke nods, “Most of my extra money goes to those that need it as well. I’m hoping to get a school set up in the Warrens at some point. Just basic education for children, and maybe adults. I’m not the teaching type, and my money is too erratic to keep a teacher on. Maybe someday.”
Key’s jaw drops in shock. “That was so unnecessary and I will have to insist on paying back every copper. I know you won’t take the money, so I’ll donate to Lukes charity in your name.”
She looks over to Luke. “How much to keep a teacher on full time?”
Rabbit chuckles at Key. “Think of it as all the sisterly presents for your birthday that you haven’t gotten from me.”
Rabbit looks over at Luke, “when we get to Kokand let’s take a look at teachers. Let Key and myself help you.”
“I have to find someone willing to work in the Warren’s and find a location. I haven’t really pulled it together behind a pipe dream. I’m more of a money mover and a healer, and don’t really know how to do this. I just think education would be a good thing for a lot fo these kids,” Luke explains.
Key is quiet, thinking for a moment. “Well, here’s a thought. We should have some extra room at the new house right?”
She looks over to Rabbit for confirmation. “We can carve out a classroom, somewhere in that large compound.”
“We might be able to use some of the house for that, or maybe use that space to shelter people that need a temporary home, but we will be better off securing space for a school and a clinic in the Warren or in the underground warrens. They don’t live outside the warrens, they will feel safer there. Also if we have a school and clinic there it might spread some positivity in the Warrens.”
Rabbit smiles at Luke while still talking to Key “Besides, we can’t get the big tree out of the Warrens, means we have to go into the Warrens… or at least I should.”
“Yeah. I have to keep my endeavors in the Warrens where it’s easier for my people to get to. Plus having strangers next to a reawakened elven heir is probably not good for attempted assassinations” Lukes says with a shrug.
“So what your saying is we need a field trip to the warrens to find a suitable place for a school and a clinic. I’ll add it to the to do list.”
She raises an eyebrow and smiles at the pair. “Im not worried about assassins. I figure I’ll have to deal with them wherever I go.”
Rabbit smiles and rolls her eyes “There have been hundreds of attempts on my mother’s life. The thing she always has fears is commoner uprisings. They are far more brutal, and hard to survive. Besides maybe we can help the Warrents out overall.”
Key smiles grimmly. “Good news there, I don’t have any commoners to stage a brutal uprising. So nothing to worry about right?”
“Simplicity has its perks. It’s also a good way to remember that servants are people, and have a perspective on what they do and need,” Luke responds.
Looking at Key “Definitely commoners will come on their own. The key is how you treat them.”
Key looks solemn. “I never intend to treat them as anything other than people with feelings, wants, and needs. If I ever change that, you both have permission to kick my ass.”
Rabbit’s face gets serious looking st Key.;“it is great if you are a liked by the common folk, but never forget you are the monarch and not a commoner.”
“A beneficent lord is good but they are not equals. That leads to others thinking they have equal say and you won’t be able to keep your crown if they think that.”
Key gives Rabbit a short, sharp nod. Her face pensive. “Thank you, there is so much to learn. I think I should start lessons with Nestrim sooner rather than later. Anything you can teach me would be greatly appreciated as well.”
Luke doesn’t say anything, as they have reached into topics he is not versed in, but he listens.
Rabbit watches Key for a moment.;“Nestrim will make an excellent source for elven court politics. I can help with some of the darker sides of it. I do have basic training from my mother, but the court was… different in how it works. I will however take care of any issues that arise for you, I am very good at that.”
Rabbit thinks for a few more moments,“Anglerond is another source I would recommend. Maybe approach him to replace Glorion. He wouldn’t mind if you found someone you loved, he would hold your power for you without taking it for himself.”
She thinks a few more seconds,“If you don’t take Anglerond, or even if you do, whoever you marry you need to declare that the male will not become King if something happens to you. If that happens, the surface races will approach him in the beginning thinking they can cut you out.”
Key looks at Rabbit for a long moment. “A matrilineal monarchy would solve that problem don’t you think?”
She shakes her head, obviously trying to work through thoughts in her head. “Don’t you think when I marry it should be to someone who will add power to my house? I don’t know about Aglarond. I am attracted to him. I think that is what scares me though. I really don’t want to repeat the mistakes I made with Arthurian. Maybe Im over reacting, but I’d like to marry someone I have no chance of falling for. It’s a blind spot I can’t afford.”
She blinks back wetness from her eyes.
Rabbit thinks about it for a moment and her smile becomes hard.“I don’t think you should marry for power, I think you should marry someone you can trust first, power second. We will carve out the power you don’t have with your Surana blood.”
“I don’t believe you should attempt to merge powers if you can’t trust them. The mistake you made with Artherien wasn’t that you cared for him. You didn’t care for him when you married him. You are someone who carries their heart on their sleeve and I suspect you are probably not capable of not caring and falling in love with someone you marry. You fell for him after you were intimate. I think Nesterim would be reliable, and I definitely think Anglerond, but that would be a personal decision you make.”
She thinks a few more seconds, she glances at Luke and back to Key “I don’t think I can give you a hard time about caring about people. My mother said it was a stupid way to rule, and a stupid way to couple with someone. Giving them that kind of power over you. She would say you are better off enjoying physical intimacy with someone you don’t let close, then you aren’t weak. It was how I operated for almost my whole life.”
Key leans forward, listening to Rabbit. She takes a moment to let her words settle in, then she leans back in her chair. “You are wise beyond your years sister. There is a piece of me that will never truly trust Nestrim. The more you make me thonk about it, that looks like the road to bitter and cynical. I know this isn’t something I should put off for long, but jumping into something right now may not do me any favors either.”
She sighs heavily. “You guys can’t ever go anywhere. Im not sure what I would do without you.” She smiles around the table at her friends.
“Can I interject with just an idea? Don’t marry at all right now. Just give it a few years. Nobody would even question your decision because of how Arthurian’s madness went down,” Luke says.
“Also, you may have developed feelings for the paladin, but it was a marriage of convenience at first. Just friends. I think you are well within your right to take lovers, have romances, but not marry at all for a good long time. . . and when you do? Have people you trust vet your prospective spouse. Everyone that can will try the long con for a marriage to you now. You can’t just trust anyone. You have to check their background, and make sure they are who they say they are. In all honesty, if you can, don’t even tell prospective suitors or lovers about your bloodline. It will simplify things,” Luke explains.
Rabbit watches Luke as he speaks.“Luke is absolutely right. The key is to keep him close to you.”
Key Turns to Luke as he speaks.“Excellent advice. I really mean it you can’t ever leave, any of you.”
She smiles at her friends.“Subject change incoming. We really need to get rid of the horses and thr wagon. Have we found out how much we were able to get for the dragons yet?”
Rabbit watches Key “why don’t you trust Nest?”
Key sighs.“Honestly its not very logical at this point. I think its just left over from our first meeting of him. He doesn’t seem to be like that anymore, but Im having a hard time not letting it color my interactions with him.”
Rabbit reaches out and takes Key’s hand in hers.“If it has anything to do with what happened between myself and Nesterim’s people, don’t let that bother you. It is between myself and him and nothing you should worry about. If I thought he was a risk to you because of that I would let you know.”
Key squeezes Rabbits hand. “That did play a part yes. Most of it is the way he treated us and everyone around him. I need to let that go though. He is my brother now. When we get to Arborlon I plan to have a chat with him to clear the air.”
Rabbit squeezes Key’s hand back.“Let me show you some tricks to take care of your new horse.”
With that Rabbit stands up, ready to leave.
