Key turns to the serving girl, pulling a gold coin from her bag. She hands it to the girl. “Thank you, and thank Fiestus for us as well.”
She waits for the girl to leave, then with a jovial smile leans over and takes a large sniff at Te’Teh. “It’s definitely you.” She lowers her voice.
“Did I not get all the dragon off?” She looks over her clothes, searching for suspect stains.
“Feistus, noticed your group spent a lot of time using the baths and requesting scrub oils and he wanted to give you an option that might be more beneficial. He didn’t mind that the bathroom was locked for so long. He wouldn’t have said anything but if you scrub so much you leave the water bloody will only leave you getting an infection. You spend good money, and he wouldn’t want you to harm yourself.” The serving girl then takes the hint from Key and turns to leave.
“Wait,” Luke says. “Is this a desert area thing? We are from a place with lots of water and bathing the way we do is the normal practice. It doesn’t lead to scrubbing so much the water is bloody. Is someone bleeding? That’s atypical, not the norm. Don’t leave. I have more questions on this because I am confused,” Luke says.
Key mutters an obscenity under her breath. “Yes please dont go. I really put my foot in that one. If I offended you I apologize. My friend Luke has some good questions. I’d like to add another to the group. Are we all okay? And where is Rabbit?”
The serving girl turns back to Luke and Key. “I wasn’t there myself, but one of the other servants mentioned the water being bloody. We thought maybe it was just that time of the month and thought nothing about it.”
The girl nods at Te’Teh and Key. “But one of the other servants said someone in your group had requested extra cleaning supplies and a hard horse grooming brush. It appeared the person was having a problem getting their hands clean. Don’t worry though, we understand sometimes people’s jobs make it hard. I know the smiths have that problem sometimes, as well as bilge workers. That is why Feistus wanted to offer that.”
She looks a little worried that she might have insulted people “I didn’t mean to imply you stink, that is not the case at all.”
“Wait. Who requested a brush? This is not normal for where we are from and if one of our party is doing that it’s because they need help. Please tell me who asked for the brush and if you know whose bath was always bloody. I’m a healer, and maybe I can help them,” Luke explains. His eyes are concerened and he has an idea or two on the party member involved.
The serving girl cocks her head thinking. “I wasn’t given a name, but the servant normally wouldn’t care. However, he talks about the ‘tiny elfen girl’ a lot and he likes brunettes so I assume its your other elven woman. I wasn’t sure myself if it was one or more.”
Key swears again. “That would be Rabbit. Has anyone seen her lately?” She turns to Luke.
“Should we check her room?”
Te’teh laugh ends abruptly as she turns and watched her friends cautiously. Unsure why the mood has changed.
Luke nods and says, “Let’s not go charging up. There might be a reasonable explanation. I’ll check with her. It might be due to the ritual I did for her,” Luke cautions.
“How about we ask her to join us down here?? We can send one of the staff up with an invitation to join us,” Luke offers.
The serving girl gets quiet for a moment. “She has been sleeping in with the horses though. She gave Hendrick a fright last night. He wasn’t expecting an elf in full armor and leathers sleeping in the stable. She was nice and all when he woke her up, but it was a bit weird. We thought maybe she had gotten back from scouting or something and was too tired to make it to her room. So he brought her out some soup. I think she is still there.
Key turns to Luke with a very worried look on her face, then back to the serving girl. “Could you go get her for us? Or grab someone else that can? Im a bit worried.”
Luke smiles, and says, “If she’s not frightening you, then perhaps you could send someone to fetch her?” Luke smiles a small tight smile at Key.
The young girl nods, gives a small courtesy to Key and proceeds to walk away. “I will get her immediately, she should be back here in a few minutes.”
With a weak smile the serving girl exits the common room.
Te’teh leans forward, concern and confusion on her face. “I am not understanding what is making everyone nervous. Why do we care if Rabbit was cleaning herself, or getting drunk and passing out in the barn? She is always weird about stuff anyways.”
Key looks over to Te’Teh. “She has just had the magical equivalent of an amputation. This is behavior that is even outside her normal. Even if it’s nothing, better to be safe than sorry. Besides, it’s getting a bit late for her to still be sleeping.”
Luke nods at Key, and tells Te’Teh, “Think of it this way, if you started scrubbing yourself until you bled, we’d ask you if you were okay as well. It’s not something you normally do. I just want to make sure she isn’t hurting.”
Reggie coughs quietly before holding up one small hand. “I hesitate to suggest this for obvious reasons, but if you are really worried about her I have learned that object we recovered from the blue dragon den would allow you to observe her or anyone somewhat candidly. I could show any of you how to use it if the need is great.”
The lightbulb went off visibly in Te’Teh’s head.“I totally understand what you mean now.”
She leans in closer. ”Is this going to be an intervention then? Do we need to sit and talk with her about it? I had a friend have this happen to, he liked the needle a little too much.”
She seems intent to do whatever the group needs of her. Her head snaps around when Reggie mentions his idea.
Keys head swivels slowly towards Reggie. “We’re going to use this as a teaching moment. We don’t invade our friends privacy. If you have any questions as far as the definition of privacy please ask Luke or I and we would be willing to let you know if your behavior is about to cross a line. Besides, Rabbit doesn’t know you well enough to tolerate that sort of thing. She would react…. badly.”
She turns back to Te’Teh. “I don’t think this will be an intervention. I think we maybeant tonlet Luke take the lead on this one.”
Luke smiles at Reggie, and says, “You don’t know Rabbit that well, you might end up dead or worse if she thought you were violating her privacy like that, so that’s probably not an optimal strategy in this case. I think our best strategy is to just ask her if she’s alright. She might have a perfectly plausible reason for her culture. I find it’s better to talk to people first.”
Luke looks at the cleaning agent the waitress left them. “Weird.”
Reggie blanches and lowers his hand slowly, remaining silent and contemplative.
Te’teh gives Reggie a friendly pat on the back. “Don’t feel bad, you will learn. Rabbit is… grumpy. It is the whole drow thing. That isn’t you.”
Key lets out a worried sigh then pokes a finger at the bottle. “What do you think is in it? It must be pretty harsh if it burns your skin if you don’t rinse it off.”
A couple of minutes pass when a Rabbit wanders up to the table. She is dressed in a wrinkled tunic, leggings and boots, the tunic still holding the linked pattern of her armor that had been pressed into it. Her long dagger on her hip, her hair slightly messed up. A slightly worried look on her face at a servant asking her to come in. She glances around the table, obviously looking for distress, her eyes softening when she looks at Luke and almost a smile at the edge of her lips.
“Is everything ok? The serving girl seemed worried and told me you needed me inside as soon as possible.” Her voice holding a little bit of concern in it.
She then shifts subconsciously on the balls of her feet, her eyes glancing around at other tables before resting back on Luke, hand resting near the pommel.
Key takes in Rabbit in one long look, worry etched in the lines of her body. She motions to an empty chair. “Please sit. We hadn’t seen you in a bit and wanted to check in with you. We also have some questions that need some answers as well. Luke?”
She looks to Luke then back at Rabbit, her body tensing ready for anything.
Luke smiles and says, “The serving girl brought this.” He motions to the job of not-soap. “Apparently you have asked the servants for a horse brush, and they think you have been scrubbing yourself blooding in the baths? Then they mentioned you’ve been sleeping in the stables. We were wondering if you were okay?” Luke leaves it as open ended as he can. He’s still hoping there is some weird Drow cultural ting that he might not understand.
Rabbit hesitates and for a moment looks like her namesake. She then sits with the group giving Key a big smile that doesn’t quite reach her eyes. She makes herself comfortable, pats Jack on the back and orders a drink. After a few moments she stops. She seems to almost avoid looking at Luke until she takes a breath, decision made and looks up at him. “Would you take a ‘yes… sort of’ answer?.”
The words underlying the lie she is unable to say to Luke. Which is in stark contrast to when she would haggle or talk outright under Sobhan’s contract. There is a small tick under her left eye as she watches the cleric.
Key lifts an eyebrow at Rabbit. “I can’t speak for Luke, but I’d rather have the truth so we can help you with whatever it is you are obviously struggling with.”
“Is there a reason you are scrubbing yourself until you bleed, and sleeping with the horses? That’s not usually accepted as behavior that someone does if they are okay? Maybe let us in on what’s going on because the serving staff were worried enough to give us a solution thinking all of Kokand uses stable brushes in the bath, and they were worried for us,” Luke says with a ghost of a smile on his lips.
Rabbit is quiet for a long time, looking at the table breathing hard and quick, almost hyperventilating like a small animal ready to run. She then takes a deep breath and looks at Luke,
“The emotions, memories and urges since the contract was cancelled have hit me like a stagecoach. The walls of numbness from the contract are gone. Everything I have done in the past, everything I still sometimes want to do, and sometimes the fear I won’t stop myself are in my head, that doesn’t even include the singing. Sometimes I wake up feeling like I am drenched in blood and I can’t get it off, drinking isn’t helping, other recreational components make it worst in the past so I haven’t tried them. Sometimes I lose myself and I came around having scrubbed my hands until they were bleeding. That is when I saw cutpurses checking out the stable and I was concerned and wanted to protect the horses.”
She closes her eyes, “That is partially a lie. I found it easier to be in my full gear and on guard. I don’t think so much about things. I can keep myself together when I am in the field, but this…” She points around the loud tavern crowd. “is harder than I thought it would be without the contract.”
She stops and looks down, not seeming to know what words to use next. She keeps running her hands up and down her thighs in a hard rub. Her breathing has returned to short sharp breaths. She seems to be waiting for something.
Key puts a hand over Rabbits in an attempt to arrest the motion she is obsessing over. She waits a moment, then starts to take long, slow even breathes and encourages Rabbit to do the same. “So, it helps to have a job? If thats the case I have a job for you if you’d like it.”
Luke nods, “I think I understand. I think you should from get Key or I if this happens. You aren’t the first person in your situation. Sometimes the ghost from our past haunt us. If you feel this way, come get us. I’m happy to talk to you, or read you stories, until it subsides. It’s probably a little healthier for you than what you are doing.” He has a lot of empathy. She’s not the only one with a past that won’t stay in the past.
Rabbit stops rubbing her thighs, watching the two. Her eyes flick between the two, and then across the other members of the group and back. Her face becomes red at the cheeks “Ok, I will come get someone and try to remember to listen to stories. That will help. Thank you for caring”
She turns her eyes to Key, “I will do whatever you need sister.”
She turns back to Luke with very large eyes, unconsciously and uncomfortably tugging at her gloves, a look of shame spreading across her face she looks down. “F’sarn taudl whol suldaim usstan. I will right my actions. I will try to not let it effect my performance.”
/drow translation “I am sorry for bringing shame here on us.” (for those of you that speak drow, or at least come close).
“You have brought no shame. That’s not what this is about. We are simply worried about someone we care deeply for and want to help in whatever way we can. Just tell us what you need and we will be happy to do it for you.”
She looks over at Luke for a moment, then back to Rabbit. She squeezes the hand under hers in reassurance.
“Oh my god Rabbit. We are not your owners, bosses, but your friends. We are worried about your well being. Do you understand? I don’t care if you scare the Inn’s servants. I do that just by walking into a room on occasion. I care that you are doing okay personally. If you don’t feel like you can sleep in your room, because it’s too quiet and leaves you with your thoughts, you are welcome to sleep in mine,” Luke says. “We can ask for another cot, or you can sleep on the bed, whatever you like.”
Luke then looks to Key, “I am sure Key will offer you the same.”
Rabbit looks at her friends and exhales deeply. Exhaustion evident in her eyes. She squeezes Key’s hand back gently, and reassuringly. She then nods to Luke. “If you don’t mind, I would like that. I would like that a lot. I promise I don’t take much space on a bed.
A twinkle flashes in her eyes, “Besides, I doubt a tree would even notice me sleeping beside them.”
She does look hesitant. “Would you mind healing my hands?”
Key nods at Luke and smiles at her friends.
“Of course you can sleep in my room whenever you feel the need. We’re here whenever you need anything. Promise us that you’ll come to us when your having these feelings during the day too?”
She lets go of the hand she’s holding so it can be healed.
Luke reaches forward to touch the tiny elf’s hands, “Here you go. you are not dirty, and shouldn’t care for the same of your actions. You are raised, and put into this as a child. It’s all you could know. The fact that you stepped outside of it all, on your now? That’s amazing. Give yourself credit for that.” He makes the motions and heals her hands.
Rabbit’s face shows the relief as she pulls her gloves off. Her hands were coverd with welts, skin tears and friction burns. The hands heal quickly, the pale skin knitting itself under the divine light of Luke’s spell. She quietly watches the divine magic. She looks up at the tiefling. “I wouldn’t have bothered you about this before now. I would normally be expected to live with the wounds, it is supposed to make the handmaiden stronger and not forget her weaknesses.
She flexes her hands, the pale skin smooth and soft. ” I can’t tell you how much I appreciate all of the care you all show. It is growing easier to ask and receive this. Please let me know if I can do anything for any of you.”
Key leans back in her chair, much of her earlier tension leaving her body. “You already do more for us than you could ever know. Ive never seen a handmaiden when I look at you. I see a sister amd a friend.”
Luke says, “Other cultures don’t see something like this as a weakness, either. I know my temple does not.”
Rabbit gives Key a big smile and nod. “I feel the same. Actually strike that, you are much closer than my sister and while I would roast her heart in front of her, I would do anything for you.”
Rabbit turns her gaze onto Luke and she gets quiet for a moment. Her eyes intent, she opens her mouth as if she was about to say something and then hesitated. After a few moments the smile comes back and she winks. “I promise to be a quiet bedmate. I completely understand if you need to boot me for a night or permanently. I don’t have to sleep with myself so I don’t know if I have any bad habits. I do appreciate that offer. In my homeland that is never offered. No one there is willing to risk their life to let someone sleep next to them.”
Key smiles all the way to her toes. “I’ll take that as a complement.” She winks at Rabbit, then folds her arms over her chest to watch her interaction with Luke.
“Well, just move your things in with me, and I promise to be a safe chaste roommate for you. I want you to know you have friends and family here, and this will not be an issue at all. Plus, we can save on room costs, so that’s a win?” Luke says with a laugh.
